Expired Licence!

When your licence has been expired for over a year it becomes a "requalify" status. You have to re-sit the tests.

When the photo licences came out it was well advertised that they were to be renewable, no longer a lifetime licence like the stupid piece of paper we had before hand.

The first licence of the new ones lasted till the first time you turned a age ending with a 5, ie if you were 21 when you got the photo licence then you had it for 4 years, if you got it when you were 36 then you get 9 years. I suppose you turned somthing 5 in 2003 nordieboy?

Sucks i know but i'm not sure what else there is to do about it.

They were brought in with the Land Transport Act 1998. I can't remember whether they were phased in during 1998 or the following year. When first issued they were current until your next birthday where you age was a multiple of 5.

EG: If you were 28 in 1998 when your first photo licence was issued it would have been current until your 30th birthday. You would have then had to get a new licence, which is then current for 10 years. If you were 25 in 1998 your first photo licence would have been valid until you were 35.

Making sure you have a current licence is your responsibility, same as Rego and WOF are. You need to check these things occasionaly to ensure they are current.

I'm not sure about when you have just let your licence lapse for a year but if you lose it by disqualification for over a year then you do have to go back through the graduated system.

Better to get advice from LTSA as this is more their domain.

Well you can take them to court but only if you have plenty of dosh. Most New Zealanders do not use ther MP's to there advantage. You pay enough in tax so why not make use of them on the odd occasion. They are after all your representitive and a vist costs nothing but a little time.

As I recall, when I turned 25 I had a letter in sent to me about 2 months earlier and went to see the testing station and paid for a new one about a month after my birthday. Have you moved in the last few years? Is your address correct at the LTSA? Would have been correct when you turned 30? Tough luck either way. Good luck with the resit.

Side note. when the new licences where brought in there was a very public outcry due to the fact that the licences expired after 10 years. People had been told that they had been given a lifetime licences(paper one) and didn't see the need/reason for the upgrade. You where/should have been made aware of the fact that it expires when you upgraded.

You renew your license every 10 years...

On these ages.......15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75 etc.

If say, when they brought it in and you were 24 then you renew it for 1 year.. then after that year, you then had to renew it for 10 years...

For those that had it for one year before renewing it for 10 years were the ones that were totally ripped off.

There is a one year leway to get it renewed.. after that its back to sqaure one...

35th. I was 37, my license runs to 45. And I will be REAL sure to renew it on time, coz no way do I want to re-sit my Class 5!

The exceptions to the gae protocol were those who were within a year of their x5th birthday when the new license was put upon them - after much protesting they got a license for up to 11 years.
