"I bought my bike to save petrol" Yeah, right.

How many of you used this reason (read "excuse") when you bought a bike? I for one, did just that....."I need a bike cause gas is sooooooooo expensive now....I can save $30 a week if I buy a bike....".......And does it save petrol? Welllllll....yes, in that it goes three times as far on a litre of gas as does the cage......but this week I emptied a tankful in just three days - mainly by hooning about the countryside each morning before work.....like the 90km loop I did this morning...and yesterday.....and the day before........and so it goes. Overall I probably use more gas now than before I had the bloody bike........but I also have a helluva lot more FUN!!!! So sod the budget I say........

LOL. Yep, you seem to use bikes a hell of a lot more just for fun than you would a car. On them every chance you get

The bigger bikes cost a hell of a lot more to run than a car when you ride them just for fun and fast
Service periods come around a lot quicker, tyres cost me a fortune with an average of 3500kms a rear and 7,000kms a front.

If I had known a well used large bike consumes tyres at that rate when you can get 30,000-35,000kms on average out of a set of hoops on a car I would have thought twice about getting back into biking. It's keeping me broke LOL
If the destination is more important than the journey you aint a biker.

If you are buying a bike to save $$$ on petrol - you buy a scooter - not a 650

Buy an old shitter 250 for $1300, that's what I did! Good on fuel too.

3500 k's out of a rear? How??? I get 1,000 k max, and thats assuming that I don't do any track days. Plus the gixer uses more gas than the cage (about 10k/l ish). But, I spend less time in traffic, and I smile more, so the money is largely irrelevant.

I love my Scoot. had to drive to work yesterday, swore like a trucker the whole way. Ride to work this morning, smiled the whole way.

Okay, so I've always wanted to ask this, but I've never had the bravery. Can we just pretend their is a bubble of safety in this forum, and no idea or statement is bad or can be mocked. So, here goes. Am I the only one who sings (badly, I might add) to myself as I ride...? "I'm a cowboy, on this steel horse IIIIIII riiiiiiiiideeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I'm a cowboy, wanted deeeeeaaaadddd or aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiivvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee eeee!!!"

Here is a post I did a while back about saving fuel and biking:

I have editied to pop in the correct fuel savings:

    Looking for some free biking?
I mentioned in another thread that my wife spends $100 per week just running around the local Bays..

It got me thinking – and we went and grabbed her a little scooter (AN125 Suzuki).

After looking at the figures (albeit it in a simple manner and I did this as a quick brain dump so forgive me if there is a mistake) - here is a awesome way to save some serious $$$$

Scooter $2700 including on road cost for 6 months
Second 6 months registration to give 12 months riding $177
Insurance for year (3rd party via AMI) $27 (Yep – serious $27 – laughed my ass off)

Assuming that we don’t have a crash or have it stolen second hand values for similar types of bike are around $2200 for a 1 year old bike.

So total cost for 12 months – resale in 12 months gives a total cost of $704.

Looking at our fuel bill – we have been saving $70 per week in petrol *. – a total saving of $3640

So the ROI on the bike is 10 weeks – giving me 42 weeks of free biking in the first year.

It gets better the second year

Second hand resale is about $1700.
    Additional years rego $ 285.
    Additional years insurance $27

So my total running cost to cover the second 12 months is $612 ($500 for the additional depreciation + rego + insurance). Weekly savings stay the same *.

Total cost for the 2 years is $1315 with a total saving of $7280.

Meaning that the ROI over the 2 years is 19 weeks – giving 85 weeks of free motoring.

Looking further ahead - they dont depreciate much in years 3 + 4 (say 150 per year) so this is almost free motering for both years.

***If fuel prices stay the same – if they go up the savings get better and better.

LOL I don't sing I'm a cowboy but sometimes will have a bit of a sing about nothing in particular cos you can and no one can here you

Believe me that 3500kms on GSX1400 rear is bad and that's no track days or burnouts. Others on the 1400 forum are getting mainly 7,000 a rear and up to 15,000kms.

    .... LOL
Today I changed the rear tyre that had been on the bike since March this year.

23,000 km on that tyre and still a few thou left before the tread went . It had squared off and I planned on changing it next week but a puncture put paid to that.

Suzuki GS1200 SS with lots of torque.

I suppose I'm just easy on the throttle and dont often exceed 120 kph .

Take that as ride like an old lady.

Front tyres usually last me half as much again in km's

We agreed the bubble of safety, no throwing stones. About a month ago I was busy singing the Lion song ("in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight'......... and as I got to the weemaway bits, the cute chick in the car next to me starts singing out loud as well...

This is why I ride, Cesare Parve wrote that we don't remember days, we remember moments, and to have this stuff happen are the moments that matter.

    To save money? Yeah, right!
It's just an expensive toy! Although it does save me time commuting, and it also saves the baby lesbian Afghani fur seal whale penguins.
And my sanity. Oops... too late...

Like others have said, although it gets a better fuel mileage than any of our cars (especially that there 205 GTi), that's not why I bought it. If I could swing it, I'd buy a commuterscooter (or smaller bike) just for getting to work and back. Apart from saving fuel/money (and the baby lesbian Afghani fur seal whale penguins ), it would mean I don't prematurely wear out the VFR (oops...too late...) and don't get sick of riding it all the time. Then I could use the VFR just for weekend jaunts. As it is, by commuting on it all the time, I don't feel much like riding it in the weekend...
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

I've got 700 k's plus a track day and the tire looks like it did two tours of duty in Bagdad... I'm thinking of reskinning it using LesbianAfghani Baby seals, do they last longer???????????? +1 to Viff.
