The company claims that it has produced a quiet motorcycle prototype with up to 35 horsepower and the ability to run for 40 minutes on a lithium ion battery without recharging. http://cleantechnica.com/2008/10/22/...ic-motorcycle/
That is awesome, if the production model does indeed put out 35hp/approx 26KW, I for one will definitely get one of these. This would indeed put the first KTM electric production off-road bike into legendary status. Most DIY electric bikes put out around 5KW so no point trying to do a MOD if KTM can market this beast at a competitive price.

What a brave new after market world. Muffler companies going out of business for a start! PWM voltage controllers a plenty, water cooled, oil cooled, regenerative braking variants etc etc. Just like the Tobacco industry, all the suppliers would have to change production lines. Sooo much easier working in sterile electronic labs than a greasy workshop!! How awesome!!
I'll get to keep clean finger nails while I MOD my bike!

Imagine that. At the start line.. Everyone primed for the flag, but wait no one has started their bike yet??? whats happening??

The flag drops and we are off LOL. No noise, just the purr of contact on contact

Then after 30 minutes of cross country you pit. No fuel just a battery change.

Fark me. What happens when you go through a puddle
    Does the bike liven up?

I'm working on a kit right now to make it sound like a motorcycle. I'm testing riveting various grades of plastic type materials to the swingarm that run into the rear spokes, kind of like we did when we were kids by clipping cards etc to the frame and into the spokes so that they go brrr brrr brrr when your riding.
I think all four stroke riders should be made to ride these bikes instead.

Twice the displacement, twice the cost and a decibel problem, I'll pass on the inside brraaaap!!!

somehow i dont think an electric bike will ever be better than a two stroke coming on the power and yanking your arms out, or the sound of any bike in full song down the beach on the back wheel
we may just go where no ones been

I remember when the Yammy TT600 blitzed me in '83. I thought it was liquid lightening. (I was on an XR250R at the time) Here I am stuck in a time warp with my XR but an electric super light dirtbike juicing out 35HP would be enuff to move me up to the next era.
I think this KTM Elektra will surprise yah. It will be revolutionary and if you want sounds then whack on a big bazooka subby on the rear! You could even mix the thumps in with your fav beats. There'll be AMPle power in the batts to power a measly 1200W subamp. A new wave of aftermarket accessories here we come woohoo.

Gay. who'd be happy with a 40 min ride with 1 hr waits in between? brilliant idea and obviously great development has gone in for an amazing achievement but still not enough to change the industry although it will one day. I'm sure this is just the beginning

Did it ever occur to you to have 2 batteries with one on charge while the other is being used?
But I know how you feel, I feel the same way about these new pimped up dirt bikes and the colourful space suits.
