They have worked out that the more stones they throw up at me the sooner they can perve at the bike when I pass them.
I doubt it. Maybe they just want to get rid of the Suzuki sniffing around the REAR of the car...

Yes I can confirm that Stoney doesn't wave like a maniac, just a quick yet clear wave. :spudwave: As do I.

I like waving to people esp little kids who turn to look at ya go passed.

Lots of road users fark me off tho. Generally speaking this is my theory:

    1) I always wave to truck drivers who let me go past No matter wot as they are the most considerate drivers.
    2) People with boats between Chch are the most bloody ignorant, like they own the frickin road. (GENERALLY)
    3) Idiots who pull over if an opportunity arises but don't slow down as well!! (Esp if I am in the old mans ute with one of bikes on board).
    4) People with no brains! Goddamn them. AND there is so MANY of THEM

If I am towing trailers etc I try to watch my mirrors as much as possible so I can pull over (and if reqd slow down). Also I will often "slow down" on passing lanes to make sure people can easily and safely pass. Even if it means slowing down to seventy before going into the Hundalees or something so the people (if there are any of course) behind can get by.

Sorry. My long winded point was that sometimes pulling over is not always enough to be a good driver, but always worthy of wave for being a considerate one!

    I believe it's unique

Wave, thank them - buy them a beer - I believe this is the only place on the planet it happens.

Most do not. but some do. I think that its a sign of the times. Along with that most people do not acknowledge when a truck pulls over to allow traffic to pass. As a road user I make it a habit to toot or wave to those slower vehicles who are considerate to the quicker ones. Also driving my Surf I'm often allowing others to pass so I know what it feels like on both sides. I think that these days most people are so absorbed in their own lives that they are totally oblivious to what is happening around them.

I'm from South Africa and the road manners here are actually quite poor as far as giving way and saying thank you are concerned.

I always nod or wave to anyone that has pulled over while I'm on the bike and here around Nelson it happens a lot. The cagers are generally quite good.

If someone moves over to let me through, they get a big nod of appreciation as I go past.

I would wave, but as letting me through is normally in rush hour, I want to keep both hands on the bars, just in case!

Moving over seemed to be non-existant here in the UK at one stage - but now it seems to have very much changed for the better and it is more often than not that a car driver will move over to let you through.

(I still recall the time some idiot in a sports car could not bear the idea of me getting in front of them at the lights, so actively moved further over. Of course, all I did was wait for them to stop, then filter quietly past to the front of the queue...)

I like to be really obvious when thanking other road users for letting me past ...

I give a big thumbs up with my left hand fully extended so they can't miss it, when I'm in front of them. If it's in the twisties & I'm too busy to remove my left hand from the handle bar, I give a little "toot, toot" with my new air horns instead.

When I'm in my own c@r, I'll stick my hand out the window with a big thumbs up, usually for trucks that let me past, and in any weather. And certainly a toot or wave for other cars towing something that actually have the courtesy to pull off the road to left the traffic past. I tend to drive to the left anyway, since I hate white line huggers, and there is provision to earn points on your licence for not driving to the left (not that the cops would actually do it, but the provision is there.)

yeah, I wave a friendly 'ta' as I sail past.. the more effort they put into moving over, the more of an effort I make waving at them.

I had one guy in a van who got the real guilts that he wasn't able to move over. I was filtering thru when I got to this guy, didn't think anything of it, cos he was there before I got there, so he leant out of the window shouting sorry!! I pulled up along side as I could, and had a bit of a quick chin wag.. He wasn't a biker, but said he had huge respect for us.. quick pat on the back, and we were off..

Anyhoo, who here is going to put their hand up and say they don't wave? All the posts here, say they do! i do..

Yeah, waves are alright, apart from those really big dumpers that smash you into the bottom, and spin you round and round like a washing machine.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Instead of waving, I just do a 'beep beep' to them (Cause there is no way in hell I'm going to let go of the grips on a corner ).

It's quite funny cause whenever I do this, I start a chain of 'beep beep's behind me as the cagers are doing the same to save face

hmm, why are you going round cars on corners if you can't ride for one hand briefly? I;m a little concerned at some of the other comments to this affect to!

But anyway... yup, gotta say thanks at least when people see you and try to help. For the most part during my lane splitting commuting, there's enough room anyway but on occasions I need to wait for a driver to move aside and will wave when I go past (prefer not to resort to lane 1A as its just another opportunity for some numbnut with too little caffiene in the morning to get me)
