Just give a raised hand off the bars for a second, that's enough.

Also on my commuting/splitting to work today, I'm getting ever more determined, two trucks were parked in both lanes at the lights coming up to the on ramp for the northern motorway off the south eastern highway, they were too close together, but I couldn't be bothered waiting cause the traffic was so bad, I could've been waiting forever, so I went between them brushing both wing mirrors on the trucks simultaneously. They were steel tray trucks anyway and my wing mirrors are plastic that have scraped the ground a couple of times each anyway.

I agree we should wave, I haven't been doing so but I will make the effort from now on, especially since I spend most of the time going down the white line and ducking back into the lane when needed. I still try very hard not to annoy any cage drivers while I do this by indicating and generally being pretty obvious with my intentions. Although I do admit I have hit (but not damaged) two wing mirrors since I have been in Auckland, I always feel very bad afterwards

Haha I was sitting at the lights in the work van and the lights changed to green and this dude went to walk out. He took the 3 steps backwards and looked rather so to make it worse, I did a big Nelson Munce "AH HA!"

    Man I cracked up!

I have always tried to wave when people pull over for me or just generally be nice and signal for me to overtake when they can see nothing coming.

I have time for those people. Its the others that stick in the middle of the road, dont pull over, tailgate you and generally piss me off.

I waved at a bike from a cage the other day and the bastard just flipped me off. All I was doinfg was being nice. But yea, its dicks like those that deserve to have all the bad shit done to them!

Hey CryHavoc, did you wave to a bike on the Totara Park bridge about a week ago?

    ps any relation to MikeyHavoc?

Common Courtesy and the reputation of NZ bikers.

Here's one for you all you bikers who are car drivers too(like wot I am).

Do you acknowledge a car driver who inches over to let you pass?
I tend to raise my left hand in the hope that it will improve the image of bikers on our roads... or at least let them know I personally am not some ignorant twat impatient to get ahead.
Furthering on from that, if you are in your car, do you offer the same courtesy to riders and let them pass?
I realise that this could open up a right can of worms, and as we all know, non biking car drivers are either blind or on their cellphones (or both).
But what about the car drivers among us? What is your perception of the NZ biker. (I say NZ biker and not Kiwi biker cos I'm a pom)

Yes, sometimes, if I can do so without compromising my concentration or riding.

Some of us do us no favours at all - riding like complete wankers, and giving bikers a bad name.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

To be honest, being polite is a habit for me and I expect the same in return, but I have found that quite a few NZ drivers don't even say thanks when you let them out, I've noticed this especially with the Asian drivers, but then again I've noticed that they are generally bad drivers. Just an observation.

In South Africa mostly everyone on the road drives like complete arseholes with no regard for the law or personal safety, yet everyone is courteous to a degree and rather polite. Weird.

When cars move over to let me filter I always nod , don't know if they can tell but I'm not risking more than that in heavy traffic. I will wave on the open road and whenever I pass any car I try not to startle the driver.

I must say I'm plesently surprised by the number of driver that do move over for me. Don't know if its the headlights (always on) or the loud exhuasts but they generally seem to know I'm there.

If a cager moves over and lets me through I give them a "big ups" with my left hand. Similar acknowledgement for other courtesies and kindnesses, but not if it involves exposing myself to danger.
