With the exception of the latest litre bikes, all the earlier ones had good midrange. Add to that, an already sorted suspension package and light weight, one can't even remotely compare the nakeds to them...
Fighter it dude... You'll miss the power and handling if you degraded to an FZ1, Speed III, Z1000 or whatever else...
My mates FZ1 is putting out the same/more power than my GSXR1000K3 is at the moment, it's more useable and it can be ridden nicely below 7k, or like a bat out of hell above 7k - and it easily handles the pace on the open road, so in all honesty there wouldn't be any 'downgrading'.
Also have a lot of respect for the Speed III in the right hands.
I just don't have the $$$ to buy either.
I'm going to be building the SF setup (bars and headlights) for my Gixxer as money allows, so should be all done and dusted in 2-3 weeks.

My response was in context to an 8K bike....
I hardly think an older std FZ, Speed III etc will match a K3 unless it's had some attention payed to it...
I don't dispute that any of the newer (more expensive) models will be more than up to the challange...
But then, I'm talking out of my ass... I've never owned one of those... Or actually ridden one, BWAHAHAHAHAHA.....
I have ridden a Z1000, S4R and Superduke and they were quite good on the road at spirited pace... So it all depends on how you ride and who you ride with really...
Well, even the 04 had a lot more midrange than the 06/07/08 by all accounts... Did it not?
And did the Gixxers not have more than the 10's?
I recently rode an 06 ZX10 and 07 Blade, there was a distinct difference between the midranges of the two bikes... Many years ago I rode a Z1000 back to back with a 06 ZX10 and the Z1000 felt absolutely flat after the 10. I have ridden an 05/06 R1 and that's just a sewing machine... Revs is what it likes. It did have shorter gearing, so didn't seem to flat though...
I concede that on paper, the older nakeds may have more low down power but when coupled to power/weight ratios, the sportbike should still have the edge, simply due to having 20kg's+ less weight...
04-05 10 was the peaky crazed animal, subsequent ones had more mid range, however, I can't remember when I last rode an 06-07 that was stock. I've ridden an indecently modified one, which walked right past me when I was doing 270 oddOne thing you cannot deny about the suzukis, they have amazing engines, with torque right from down low (as much as I hate suzuki)
Nakeds have their engine management systems re-tuned, with less up top, more down low. Apples with apples, the cb1000r I believe has crazy amounts low down, cbr1000r, not so much, but then it has more at the top end, higher red line etc.I concede that on paper, the older nakeds may have more low down power but when coupled to power/weight ratios, the sportbike should still have the edge, simply due to having 20kg's+ less weight...

Problem with all the sportsbikes, is that comparatively, they all make their power higher up. Large amounts of hp, you simply can't let it come on low down. They get looped enough as it is, with their really tall first gears.
hehehehe, poor mate was a bit pissed when his "special" 06 zx10 got beaten off the lights by a cb900
After I beat him a few times, he tried a drag launch... unfortunately, so did I, and while he scooted off, I tried to stop it 12'ing on me![]()

Guys truth of the matter is that the modern sports do have torque.. its just that they rev so damn hard that we forget how much they got.. after all Torque Rev and that magic 5252 make up our BHP figures.
If you look at the graph the K7 has 60 ft/lbs at 4k and for most of the rev range has over 80!! My 1100 twin only manages a best of 75 ft/lbs and at 3500 has only 60 available.
Drop a tooth in the front and forget about "perceptions".... tune is tune![]()
