    Riding on footpaths?

i know its illegal but how illegal is it?the posties do it on thier ct110s and now in auckland theres this new crowd who use them to ride along footpaths and verges picking up rubbish with these prong things,so do they have exemptions or do the police turn a blind eye to them?a worker in the same industry as me(courier)rides 10metres up a footpath and gets slapped a fine and loss of licence for 3 months

I utilise footpaths and whatever it takes to "make progress". The experience of your courier friend is somewhat concerning though...

Good to see you still around, scumdog
Some people just can't seem to comprehend that they do not have the right to be unoffended in their lives.

My boss told me we're the only ones allowed on the footpaths, even the posties aren't. I'm one of them litter collector people, our company only got the contract from Auckland City Council a few weeks ago so it's a new thing. They've been doing it for years out in Waitakere City though. Many police have driven past me cruising around on the footpath and some even smile and wave.

That colour added with your crazy overalls and fluro belts is eye catching as!
Although I didn't notice if you had a cool fluro orange flag like the posties do!

Are you actually one of those collectors?

Yep! If you see an Asian guy it'd be me, haha. We don't have the flags, and I stopped wearing the yellow rainsuit this week, it got way too hot wearing them and as well as keeping the rain out, they keep the sweat in! We're required to have the fluoro vests on though.

I saw a CBR cruising around last week around Richardson Rd or Hendon Ave or something (I think) when I was doing that area, that wasn't you was it?

Yep Civic Contractors, I did Broadway for a few days, always before or around 9am though, so there weren't many shoppers at that time, mostly schoolkids. Civic Contractors actually got permission from the council to do this, at least out in Waitakere City anyway.

In our little town (and in many others I see) bikes are regularly parked in all sorts of pedestrian areas. They didn't just fall there out of the sky, so I happily ride on the paths when thats the way in or out. I wait for a lull in the pedestrian traffic and ride the clutch (walking speed) and if a person walks in front of me I stop and give way to them. No one ever looks twice at me, except to say "nice bike."

"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

I don't reckon it's a particularly big deal (but I've ridden on footpaths a few times... , and have often parked on them). How many accidents do you hear of from people being mown down by a postie or delivery person on a scooter? It's very common to have posties on CT110s in Oz, and doesn't seem to be an issue.
However, apart from parking, I think my use of footpaths to bypass a traffic-clogged piece of road are over; I didn't enjoy falling off last time I tried it (lost the front wheel on the damp grass and faceplanted on the footpath).
In my defense, my brain was ferkt at the time.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Hey, stay off the footpaths - the crazy boy racers around where I live use them when drifting goes bad. Surely the tossers in Nissan's have right of way or ownership of sum'thin'?
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.
