Yamaha Tenere in NZ

Yup, saw the first new Tenere in NZ today.
Privately imported, and at the local VINZ trying to get a brake certificate, (due to low volume import etc).
White one, and looking pretty good. Personally, I'd take to it with spanners to lose alot alot of crap hanging off it, but a nice bit of kit all the same.
C'mon Yamaha NZ, get your act together.

Can't see the point meself . Apart from an extra disk, and fuel injection, its heavier and slower than a KLR amd with even more plastic to break. And it costs a shit load more.
It's possibly uglier than a KLR as well but thats subjective.

Part of the KLR's appeal is its 'utilitarian' looks. Its the fat Labrador of adventure bikes.

I cant imagine why anyone would buy a Tenere - for a few grand more you could get a new GS650 or for a hell of a lot less you could get a KLR.

Unless they have fixed it the FI on the XT660 motor was way too snatchy at low speed (it would have Jamie frothing at the mouth) - it really spoiled slow speed 'pootling' - something the KLR excels at

We got the new Tenere in the Uk a fe wmonths back now; they are heavier and no quicker than the old ones... I've owned ridden a lot of the older teneres, had the xtz660, ttr600, klr600, klr650 etc etc.... Main thing i dont like on the new one is the stepped seat... you WILL clout the hight rear part regularly with your boot; wont stay pretty for long. I tried it at a dealers in Leicester when it was released. Also, you need to slide back and forth on a long road ride, which you cant do on this. Prob is a nice reliable bike, but I dont see why they let it get so porky. Looks good enough but I wouldnt spend the $13000 they cost in the UK.

This was one of the things that caught my attention also. A very comfy seat it looks, but seems like you would be locked in one position. A bit of an issue if spirited gravel cornering is called for. (not that the scrambler could ever be known as spirited, but on several ocassions, it's plank like seat has allowed me to quickly load/unload the front to avoid washing out the front. I still end up in ditches though

Yep. Either fill in the front or drop the rear a bit.

Of course I'd have to ride it a bit to test...

This might be a serious adventure bike, rival the BMW and KTM machines perhaps?

Europeans have be saying this since early 2008 and were expecting it at a show in Oct 2008. Never arrived and the sketches/mockups I've seen so far make it look more like a styled up TDM/Vstrom than a revised XTZ or KTM 9X0. I'm sure if and when it arrives it will be a hit with the Euro's and Yanks for their long distance touring and little bit of nice gravel but I'd put money on it not be a real (thrid) world adv bike. Besides who really needs 1200cc and 100+hp of grunt and the associated weight when adv riding? Can you tell I'm sceptical of when and what might be produced?

I'd take a revised XTZ750 @ ~180kgs any day. Yammy should have stuck a new 600-750 twin in the XTZ660. With the same weight the as the 660 currently is this would have been great. Hmmm F800GS anyone (damn BMW prices)?

Did they give an indication on price?
I spoke to my preferred Yamaha dealer down here and asked if they'd heard anything.They thought they were ment to be here late last year and then I asked about price...he said it'll be quite a bit more than the current XT660,which would put it probably near $15k!
The DR650 with added extras suddenly looks a real bargain,not that they aren't at the moment though.
