Seems as though new regs regarding exhaust systems are due in soon, but these have been reworded by the govt so instead of every car (and m/c's?) being required to have an exhaust system with an 'effective silencer', the new rules drop the reference to 'effective silencer' to now having an exhaust in good working order that has 'some means of sound attentuation'
Seems this is too open to interpretation for our chch based lawyer who reckons that some steel wool in the pipe would satisfy the new regs, so he is going to appear before a parliamentary committee today to appeal the new regs. He wants only exhausts that are quieter or the same as factory pipes to be fitted on vehicles. And to add to this Tim Barnett has begun work on his private members bill to ban modified exhaust altogether.
While I sympathise with residents being kept up all night by boy racers with loud pipes it looks like my $1000 plus Yoshi might be illegal soon. It only takes a few rotten apples to spoil the bunch, and those of us that choose to replace our standard systems are going to pay the price because of a few idiots in their lowered single cam Hondas/Toyotas etc that screw the nuts off them trying to keep up with the flow of traffic. I know plenty of people with highly modified cars, they for the most part drive slow around town (nothing to prove, licence to lose) who also are going to pay the price.
Hmmm, no real point to this rant, other than to bring up the topic for debate. If this has already been touched on before on this site, well this is fresh news from todays paper regarding a lawyer acting on the behalf of concerned residents going to parliment today.
