Lawyer to appeal new exhaust regs

Seems as though new regs regarding exhaust systems are due in soon, but these have been reworded by the govt so instead of every car (and m/c's?) being required to have an exhaust system with an 'effective silencer', the new rules drop the reference to 'effective silencer' to now having an exhaust in good working order that has 'some means of sound attentuation'

Seems this is too open to interpretation for our chch based lawyer who reckons that some steel wool in the pipe would satisfy the new regs, so he is going to appear before a parliamentary committee today to appeal the new regs. He wants only exhausts that are quieter or the same as factory pipes to be fitted on vehicles. And to add to this Tim Barnett has begun work on his private members bill to ban modified exhaust altogether.

While I sympathise with residents being kept up all night by boy racers with loud pipes it looks like my $1000 plus Yoshi might be illegal soon. It only takes a few rotten apples to spoil the bunch, and those of us that choose to replace our standard systems are going to pay the price because of a few idiots in their lowered single cam Hondas/Toyotas etc that screw the nuts off them trying to keep up with the flow of traffic. I know plenty of people with highly modified cars, they for the most part drive slow around town (nothing to prove, licence to lose) who also are going to pay the price.

Hmmm, no real point to this rant, other than to bring up the topic for debate. If this has already been touched on before on this site, well this is fresh news from todays paper regarding a lawyer acting on the behalf of concerned residents going to parliment today.

    Ferking great.
Anybody know how this will effect big bore or stroked engines.
I mean if I ever get around to puting the 750 or 840 kit in my bike I'm not going to run a standard exhaust system.
Even more so because they can't be got anyway.

    Cool Bloody Lawers

Hi there. Did any of these do gooders think what this law change will do to the economy? no more tickets for noisy bikes and cars auto shops going broke . i read somethink in the paper that said a Christchurch red bus was putting out 105 db at a stop sign so Mr Barnett better get his own back yard sorted out before he starts bitching about a few Bloody CARS and BIKES. why dont these do gooders do something about real problems like CRIME instead of pissing in our pockets all the time, about average KIWIS spending their hard earned money on what they want to.

I've had my bitch so have go to.

Tim Barnett would have to be the last person to talk about banning modified exhausts. I thought his interest lay in doing the mods :sly:
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Maybe he should try banning the exhaust pipes on push bikes for the noise aswell

So those Harlies can get away with 200dB while us sitting on 80dB with aftermarket exhaust have to obey the regulation. this is just sad

they should honestly make it objectively enforceable eg the dB system and not some "not louder than factory muffler" as I'm sure every bike's factory sound is at different noise level

    just my 2 cent
