Unfortunately if they do pull you over they will see from the registration details on the computer that it's a 500

Such a bloody stupid and dangerous law learner riders only allowed to do 70k's. What speed are learner drivers allowed to do?. It just makes other road users get irrate with learner motorcyclists travelling at that speed. Isnt it about time they changed it to 100 k's then everyone who uses our roads will be happy.

This is the first occasion I have heard of The Fuzz busting an L-plater for travelling at or near the legal open road limit, and that troubles me.

Did you get the $400 and 25 demerit points, then, or just a telling off?

Yep I got a 400 buck fine and 25 demerit points. I wonder if I should apply for payment assistance to drip feed it to them for the next 10 years.

What *I* think you should do is write a letter pointing out that:

    (a) you were not breaking any other road rules, and would have been less safe if you'd been sticking to this one, and

    (b) this regulation is currently being looked at with a view to scrapping it. I'm sure you can find some hard supporting evidence to show that it's been discredited, maybe even some commentary from high-ups in the Police or LTNZ about it?

I reckon you'd have a high probability of getting the ticket waived. Worth a try!

Me too! I get the feeling there may be a teeny bit more to this story somehow.

Sucks to be busted doing 103 (assuming here you were in a 100kph zone) really. You were however outside your L-plate restrictions so it is what is known as a fair cop. More information about the whys, and what happeneds would be good.

Welcome to KB too Lurch. Might pay to slow down a bit for the next little while

Yeah, me too. I just did my whole learners with the L plate on, doing the posted limit, after advice from both KB'rs, AND COPS! That's right, I asked a couple of cops I know. One didn't even remember the 70k rule!

A mate of mine got done for doing 96k in an 80k area. On his learners, with no L plate, at 10:40pm, and he just got done for 16kph over the limit.

From what I've heard, if you're not being a dickhead, and sticking to the posted limit, they'll leave you alone. If you're being a dickhead (going over the posted limit, weaving through traffic dangerously etc.) they'll do you for that AND being outside your license rules.

They're looking at changing that law anyway. They know it's dangerous to be doing 30k or more LESS than the rest of the traffic!

Anyone else heard of them doing learners for doing over 70?
I figure car drivers must be Apes. All they do is sit in cages all day & grunt

It seriously makes me think about taking it off if it's just gonna make me a target for evening traffic quota filling.

She quoted me some some statistics to make me feel guilty and I nodded my head whilst knowing that none of them were relevant to me being 30 and on a 150cc wearing high vis and full gear.

    Thanks officer... drive safe now.

    Rant over.
the beauty of motorcycling is that your number plate is behind you.this is relevant because if your "L"plate "fell offyou would not be expected to know about it til you got where you are going..maybe.

funnily enough,if your "L"plate "fell off",you would probably not get pulled over by a upholder of the law to tell you about it in the first place

I was in the right hand lane going North on SH2 just past the Haywards hill lights in 6pm traffic doing 90-110 the whole time, had just shifted to the left lane past the typical merging chaos at that intersection and then about 100 meters on saw a black car changing lanes behind and then the lights. Pretty sure there was nothing apart from a big L on my bike that would have caused her to look twice.

I'm pretty sure I was on my best behaviour throughout the ride and I'm really a bit of a nanna. I rarely even lane split on my way from Upper Hutt to Welly for work.

Yeah, that's why I said "over your learner's limit".

My reply was meant to be tongue in cheek, it's a bit rough on you if you ask me, you're obviously not a "boy racer", you were the proverbial last deer being chased by the tiger

This is worth a crack. Point out the blatantly obvious dangers. There are plenty of threads about this sort of thing in here. That 70kmph rule gives me the shits.....

Heh... I assumed he was in a 100 zone as well... Good point!!!

Good calls. This is how I see it. Only time I know of learners "getting the learn" is when they have been dickheads attracting attention to themselves.

In this case, maybe you just struck a newbie who was "advised" by her supervisor to write this one out on ya....

I would write in. 400 great reasons to give it a go. If ya don't ask, ya don't get....

Edit - was typing while you answered as above Lurch... Feel free to PM if ya wish
