Posting bike videos on YouTube and similar?

I have got McJim Cam up and running again and have filmed a wee bit of local road. I have fiddled with the clips using arcsoft impression and instead of the nasty wind noice I replaced it with some music.

I am making a clip about 5 minutes long. First effort was 850 megabytes so that ain't gonna fly so I wanted to know from some of you camera junkies.

What is the best format for youtube videos and what settings make for the best compression with minimal loss of quality but still getting to an uploadable size.

Also where does the law stand with me posting my video on Youtube with the dulcet tones of Pink Floyd instead of wind noise? Can I have my arse sued off or suchlike?

    Cheers

Easiest by far way is autoGK, set it to 80 percent quality, set the output resolution at 352 and see what she spits out.

    Then upload it to youtube.

    http://www.autogk.me.uk/

As for your music, If someone complains then youtube will look at it and may remove it, Not worth worrying about.

If anyone tries to sue, Tell them its an original composition, You have no idea who these young upstarts Pink Floyd are, But if they have stolen your music then they will pay...oh yes, they will pay.

I wouldn't worry about getting the best quality out of your videos as youtube quality is shite anyway, even the high quality versions.
I would just use xvid compression with similar quality settings that you would use for tv series.

You will get something like this (remember to click 'watch in high quality')

That was a 200 meg upload.

    Haven't uploaded it yet though....

Technically, the answer to your question is Yes. But it is so widely done, and it is quite complimentary to the copyright holders that no one will say anything to you about it.

"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

Can you detail the video set up you had on the bike, because that is remarkably clean video.
It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

Yeah, it's even better quality than the videos Headbanger keeps sending of himself and so many random hot women in imaginative and flexible positions.

    Probally not the greatest move........

You really want to get the best quality at a usable size, rather then sacrifice everything for file size. WMV compression is bad to start with, compressing 800mb into 20mb is a big leap, and youtube will re-encode it as well which will be another drop in quality.

That autogk is an automated 1 step encoder which uses xvid, it will spank the pants off any wmv encoded file, and you can set the maximum file size to anything you want, Which also heps for the purpose of comparisons.

With youtube, The more quality you give them, the better (hopefully) quality of the final video, I tend to upload 80mb files.

I haven't ever managed to get the quality of the file linked above though. But that maybe because I generally have the handle bars in my view, which creates a lot more moving surfaces.

    Or not, Just a guess.

I have made my 2nd vid with the new helmet cam and uploaded it at 14.4MB. I just used the bundled Movie Maker and saved it to broadband speed.
Mostly because I don't really know to much about the procedure and I find this reasonably idiot proof for me.
It gives you a few different choises on what to reduce the size to.

Well I'm uploading my work so far - will embed it here once it's done...unless it's terrible then I'll see what else can be done.

And here we go...'salright I suppose - don't have time to upload a 300Mb + file though so it will have to do in the meantime.
