The pathetic enduro tank size is the real killer with the BMW - its almost like they did it deliberately to stop it stealing sales from the GS range.
(desperately tries to ignore provocative KLR comment)

That tank size issue is a European thing.
For example NZ/Oz KTM models all get bigger tanks than the Yrup versions.
Even then, it is often inadequate (14.5l on a 950 Super Enduro? Stoopid).

I'm not sure what BMW are trying to achieve with their range - they've ditched the single cylinder GS for the much more expensive twins.

The X is not supposed to be an Adventure bike (mind it can be converted to one) so why asking for 500K range? It has a good fuel economy (I get 210 with 8l taking it easy), whether is an enduro bike could be the question, but I guess it is as much as Kt 690 about same weight (ready to ride full tank), about same range (though BM consumes less fuel).
    * Kt has good suspension while BM has cheap front fork and odd rear,
    * power wise Kt has more but BM is not bad at 53hp, don't see many people actually needing more than that
    * balance wise BM is very good (haven't ride Kt)

    Cheers,

This thread got confusing, and I don't think I'm the only one who was confused. I take it this is what we're talking about...

Yep, the X-Ch is pretty similar in spec to my 03 640E, cept the 640 carries more gas. The 690 is definitely lighter, faster, better & you would have had to have a serious blind BMW addiction to buy an X-Ch for the same money. Hence the price drop I guess.

Dunno about those KLR's, I don't think I'm old enough to ride one yet

I wouldn't buy Bm over Kt for the same money I agree. That Kt is faster take your word on that, not much lighter i read the 690 is 3k lighter when fully fueled. Bm is not a bad bike at all, Bm service has been an utter crap that's for sure.

KLR's I'm not paleontologist so can't really say much

    Rotax

All the models after 2000 are rotax engines.

All models before 2000 are rotax engines (and assembled in Italia).
