Yeah he is sort of. He started Motocross in 88 but didn't actually like it, then started on 125s in '98 I think and the All Japan Supersport Champ, and then All Japan Superbike, and then replaced Dajiro Kato in MotoGP after he died. He has vastly more circuit experience than motocross.

How do you know how far you can lean the bike when it's raining?? Obviosuly in the dry the bike can lean as far as the pegs/knee etc but not in the rain, so how can they sense when you are getting to the limit of lean? What kind of signs can you feel from the bike?

The suspension and tyres tell you a lot. You know how far you can lean, because just after that point the bike slides, a good rider can feel the point just before then and stay just inside of it. It's also a lot to do with traction management and being really really smooth with brakes and throttle.
