Okay, SloFox, I respect you, so none of the normal piss take stuff applies here.
I own a GSXR1000, and a K5 GSXR600. I love 'em both, but the bikes have very different personalities.
The 1000 is too much for about 100% of situations, it has far more torque (forget horsepower, its the torque that fires you out of corners and makes your tires squirm). The dilemma is that, analogous to being addicted to crack, it's not a long term plan for health and well being. 150mph wheelstands. Lighting up the rear in the dry by being careless with your right hand. This has a point, I'll get to it. The thing is, it's too much, 97% of riders wouldn't have the skills, the patience, the balls to ride it near the limit consistently. For the record, after 3-4 years with it, I'm still not good enough to ride it at the limit consistently.
So, the 600. It's a different feeling. It has very little torque, so you can use the throttle as an on/off switch - with reckless abandon. You spend more time pulling on the throttle, and you don't have enough power to effortlessly slide the bike in the same way as the 1000. The thou is like being tickled to death by a grizzly bear. The 600 is like getting a bear hug from mommy.
The problem is the lack of torque with the 600, and the excess of torque with the 1000. The earlier thous have the most torque, which is why I own a K2. Mine has been further stoked with most of my wealth (and food budget) with a sprinkling of Yoshimura parts internally and externally, making the problem worse.
So, the solution is the 750. It's the most perfectly balanced bike in the known universe, it rides wonderfully, and all of them have been great (from about 99 onwards).
It has the torque that the 600 hasn't, when the 600 frustrates with its lack of forward momentum, the 750 has the gearing that makes it feel close to the thou (but it's missing the pucker factor that thou causes).
The 750 has all the nimbleness of the 600 - it's much easier to be clean and fast than the 1000.
If you buy the 600, you'll be disappointed with it, it might take 6 months, but ultimately the 750 is so much better when even small margins make a big difference.
I'd buy a low mileage k6 or k7, and save $4000 that way. Budget the difference you save on a ohlins rear shock, and get the bike set up perfectly for you.
Don't be tempted to upgrade the exhaust, the fueling is really tough to get massively better (Power Commander + Yoshi + loads of dyno time).
If you take me seriously, take this advice, buy the 750. You'll spend the rest of the year thanking me.
Its diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; its life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

Madbike boy has it sussed! I bought a new K6 1000 in July 06. It was a bloody PRIMO bike, just far too powerful! I toasted a SET of tyres on it in 3500km. It had a lot more low end and mid range power compared to the K1, K3 and K4 1000s I had owned previously. You have to be very careful to either a/. not light it up coming out of a corner, or b/. not get whacked in the face with the dashboard.
In Nov 06 the other half buys a new K6 sem fiddy. One week later I was the proud owner of one, too.
The sem fiddy is very nimble, with VERY usable power. Spend time above 10,000 rpm, and it's just another angry little gixxer..... or ride at near speed limit speeds, and have a bike that you can happily do 800km+ days on, with tyres, chains etc lasting a lot longer.
Go find yourself a K6 or K7 sem fiddy, you'll love it!
That was with an Ohlins shock and cartridges fitted too.
If we weren't sharing the roads with dickheads, and didn't have the restrictions on us, I might still own the K6 1000.
My personal preference though, by a long shot, is the bike I now own. I've had it two years as well... bloody near a record for me! And I still love it
Recently I read a review of the k8 750 which pretty much bagged the k7 and older models - basically raved about the K8. Any opinions on this from anyone?
and I HAVE used the search function this time.....![]()
. No pleasure is worth giving up for two more years in a rest home. Kingsley Amis
and compare it with a test ride against the k7/k8 600 the then k7/k8 1000...
no comparison mate,, the 1000 is all EVERYTHING you need.. its not an untamed beast like the k1,2,3,4,5 1000's.. its refined and kicks ass..
still.,.. dont take our word for it.. test ride 'em all..
