Yup - these days no-service station is the more appropriate term.
You can still find the other kind though. The no-hassles, no-bullshit service stations.

It is preferential to refrain from the utilisation of grandiose verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualisation can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities. (...such as the word fuck.)

Hello officer put it on my tab
Don't steal the government hates competition.
Yeah shell did use to have a policy (when i worked there) were you could fill out a form and pay later but it was abused so they ended it. I still let genuine people who couldnt pay come back its easy to tell....
Not worth a tinkers! We dont take cellphones, licence, bank cards , spare wheels jacks etc. Goods that are are a nescessary are good childs saftey seat ,power tools lots of modern cages have sound system that always get returned for ( if not most of weekend staff are bidding for ) Tank would of got seven days credit with that much collatal from us.
Boys can't ride broken toys.
Service stations have forms to fill in for just this sort of thing. For some attendent to threaten to call the police needs to be adressed by Shell managment. I suggest you write them a letter explaining 'exactly' what took place.

PS
Seems Shell has changed it's policy. I'd still write a letter.

Man, when I started reading the story I was hoping that the police would be called and you would have to wait for them to arrive and then get to explain your situation. I would love to know the response from an officer of the law upon arriving at that situation.
Geez, a guy offering to leave photo ID and expensive items - seems like a no brainer for the service station manager, who co-incidentally seems to have no brains.
I have once managed to fill my car then realise that I did not have my wallet with me. I explained to the (BP) service station manager that a return trip to my home would take less than 10 minutes, he got me to write down my name, address and license # (I think) and I drove off, returning less than 10 minutes later and paying. I still use that service station and always check that I have my wallet before pumping the gas.
Rubbish - if the owners don't return in a week then the staff can take it home - who's to say otherwise? It would only be illegal if they involved the law and got an opinion, if they just take the stuff home and say nothing then the law has better things to worry about it.
If they were to take the items to a police station and explain the situation then the police would probably treat it as lost property - if unclaimed for 6 months the service station owner would then become the legal owner of that property. But who would bother with that?
If I were the service station owner or manager I would gladly hold onto anything offered that was worth clearly more than the petrol. I would also get the name, address, license number & number plate. I would tell the person that if they didn't come back that day then their details would be passed onto the police. If some customer left an iPod or cellphone or digital camera or whatever then it would be unusual for them not to return.
