Thumbs up Motorcylce cops do it to......

    Lane splitting!!!

I'm waiting at the Nelson St motorway off ramp lights this morning in the middle lane when what do I see but a motorbike cop lane split to the front of the lights.

Ok I think, he's going to go after someone who runs the red light from the northwestern off ramp (happens every day) good on ya

But no, 3 cars run the orange and 1 the red!! What does said cop do? Nothing just waits for the lights to go green and carries on his merry way.

Must have been late for his Latte, so it is ok to lane split at the lights??

    cheers

If the cars are stationary, like at lights, or indicating a right turn then you can pass them on the left within the same lane as them. It's when they are moving that there is a problem. Another one of those instances where doing something in a completely safe and cautious manner will earn you a ticket. Example being traffic on the NW m'way is doing 15kmh, motorcycle is doing 35kmh past cars in lane 3 but is within lane 3 and on the left of the cars = $150 ticket. The rub is that there is apparently only one "bike" cop who does this. Others I've spoken to recognise the problems and advantages of riding a motorcycle in rush 3 hour traffic and unless you are being an idiot will leave you alone.

I had to laugh yesterday - I'm sitting at a roundabout in a Hi Ace in the left lane with a cop car on my right.I'm watching the traffic to make my move...as you do - I see a gap and start my move, but no,the car is doing a 360 and coming around from our right.I only move 200mm and stop - but the cop continues on,right across the front of an oncoming car who had to brake to miss him!

    Oh,that's right...it was my fault

Must say I've filtered past (caged) on the SH2 commuting in to Wellington, never been given any grief. I'm puzzled by this passing on the left in the same lane comment though, I would have thought passing on the right was also acceptable as in...... when passing someone while staying to the left of the yellow line. As I recall the road code doesn't prohibit such a maneuver, just prohibits the crossing of the line.

I had a bike cop pull up next to me on the 1K the other day and ask if I wanted to swap bikes. He wanted something with "a bit more go."

"Don't know if you could handle it mate"

"You cheaky prick" he says with a big grin on his face.

Yup, they do have a sense of humour.

problem is, you don't know which ones are the decent blokes, and which ones are the beaurocratic nazis who'll ticket you for any excuse.

Came down ngauranga gorge this morning and caught up to a crowd of 4-5 bikes hanging a couple of car lenghts back from a bikey cop. Do you risk it and filter past? or sit in the traffic and protect your license?

I chose the sit in the traffic behind the cop and left the motorway at the next exit in order to resume lane splitting in peace.

Yeah, I've seen them filter thru before. It's ok to do it, as long as the traffic isn't moving. The one I saw the other day filtered to the front, then gunned it from the lights! He wasn't on a call or anything, just cruising. I guess everyone has to have that 'quick fix' off the lights once in a while.. I filter where safe, all the time.

You might find that it's the bike cops who will sit next to you at the front of the lights, but if a caged cop sees you doing it and doesn't understand why etc, then they may be the ones to give you a pressie for your efforts..

I've also seen cops; on cell phones while driving; backing up the southern motorway to get off a junction he/she had driven past; do a U turn without looking; and run a red light without 'good' cause
