Believe or not your driveway is by legal definition a "public road" and the drink/drive laws apply just as much in your driveway as they do on the street. If the officer believes you are over the limit (or you're getting too cheeky or annoying) you can be asked to provide an evidential breath test, and if failed, charge you with DIC. Ignorance of the law will not be an allowable defence.

Why the hell would you help drink drivers get away from the police ? They are the ones that crash into us head on and we die. If I see you do I'll make sure I tell them.

There should be alcohol check on every corner of every neighbourhood. Wether you are drunk on a bike or a car , if you are over the limit you should be f*%$#d in the ass by the cops for risking other peoples lives.
Totally agree. Blackshear needs to have a think about why BADD was st up in the first place.

Say what ever comes first... remember to slur your words into the black device. But heres my recommendations

"Have you been drinking sir" your reply... "*hic* Fucken oaths I ave beens *hic* drooken offidiser... *hic*...how *hic* you fink i *hic* go so fast *hic*"

When they find you sober... expected, drug and vehicle check...

"Is this vehicle stolen" your reply "bloody oath its stolen, I stole out of my garage this morning on my way to work... but after a hard days work I decided I should give it back..."

"Do you have any drugs on you..." your reply "Bloody oath I do, as... asprpran *hic* pirins are handy *hic* for in de morning... *hic* speshlee when I dis pussed *hic*"

your final reply should be... "the cuffs are too tight waaaahhh..."

Well if I saw a checkpoint I certainly wouldn't do a u-turn to avoid it...that just screams GUILTY.

Twice I have been stopped at a checkpoint while on the bike. First time was at my own motorway off-ramp, I had been riding all day, drinking ONLY lemonade and at we stopped at the Albs for a meal and a drink before going our separate ways. I had ONE JDs.
Failed the alcho-tester and had to blow in the bag! Oh the shame! Of course I was fine and the officer was really nice about the whole thing.

2nd time was similar...stopped at Ngatea and we had JUST left the pub at Paeroa where I'd had ONE measley glass of wine... had to blow in the bag and this time I was a Failed Youth.
My mate'd had a bourbon and she was fine...go figure.

Does anyone remember that Police-Stop show years ago when a car was stopped in Grafton and the lady driver was so pissed she actually greeted the officer with "Good Evening Occifa". She then opened the car door and sprawled onto the road...the cop sniffed inside the car suspiciously and asked if they had been smoking weed. She answered indignantly " YESH! and we smoked it all so you can't have any!!!"

    Classic.

I had the chance to sit in a pub and drink with access to the breath testing machine a few years ago. If you had a drink and within 15 min or so got tested your reading would be higher than if you waited a bit longer. I must say the from that I realized, the limits are WAY to high in NZ and it can take a while to show up on the machine, because i felt a way more drunk than that. Those who took part either walked home or were driven by a sober partner. We got the results from the machine the next day showing all the readings and times (which were recorded against each name). The only thing I regret was not staying longer after stopping drinking to see how long I was actually over the limit for.
I may be slow at getting things but..... no wait I'm just slow.

Sooooooo...what happened to the 'innocent until PROVEN guilty' part of the law?
or is it 'until ASSUMED guilty'? because I turned around I was instantly proving my own guilt? So the police become judge, jury, and EXECUTIONER on the side of the road huh?
When I blew in to his device it came back ok.
Imagine if he had run over one of those little kids on the side of the road....and for what?? a guy on a bike who was merely turning around to avoid the checkpoint because he hates talking to police due to prior bad experiences, and was sober anyway....
does that justify that copper putting lives in jeopardy..cause I 'acted in a suspicious manner'?
Think hard about this one people, or does the end justify the means, even if innocents die!
As he was getting back into his unmarked police Commodore (bright red)
I said to him, "Hey, it wasn't worth the chase was it? but at least you got your adrenaline fix today I s'pose"
He glared at me with a typical shortman syndrome pissed off look.
I went home happy, and had a beer

I guess you thought you were performing a public service, but you've actually got it back to front: the police checkpoint is a public service, and all you were doing is aiding and abetting any unlicensed drivers, drunk drivers, people with no WOF or rego, people driving stolen cars, people with stolen goods in their cars, crims on the run, or anyone else who had a reason to want to not talk to the cops.
    That's not cool at all.
    ... and that's what I think.

How would he have known you from the guy who had had six pints too many and had turned around to avoid the checkpoint because he was way over the limit?

Check points are completely contrary to the concept of probable cause. They should be discontinued.

You could say that for a lot of police chases, I guess.
A few years ago, I got my first speeding ticket in 30 years of driving. I had been following an SUV for about 10 or 15 minutes, at 85-90 km/h, and it was getting cold and I was getting tired of the diesel fumes. The first passing lane I came to, I gave it a bit much throttle (I was pissed off), and didn't see the cop hiding in the rest area on the other side of the road. As soon as I was past the SUV, I slowed down. Nevertheless, it took probably 10km of the cop driving with his lights'n'siren on to catch me, because traffic was very heavy (the reason I couldn't pass before the overtaking lane).
I thought it ironic in a way that the reason speed limits exist is (presumably) for road safety. Which caused more risk to other drivers - me blatting past in a passing lane, exceeding the speed limit for maybe 20 seconds, or the cop forcing traffic out of the way for several minutes, on a very busy and narrow road?
In saying that, it was perfectly reasonable to give me a ticket, because I was (allegedly) well over the limit (do the crime, pay the time. Or money...) It just got me thinking about the philosophy behind laws, especially traffic laws. They say "the law's an ass", and it is, if the enforcement of it is worse than not enforcing it, and/or if it goes against the will of the majority of the population it's supposedly protecting.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.
