Refuelling and the hot sun...

Last week I refueled the bike earlyish in the morning.....then commuted the 7km to work and parked the bike for the day. It sits outside at work, behind the shop and is in the sun. Part way through the day as I walked past said bike, I noticed the fuel breather line dripping a little fuel...."Hmmmm" I thinks. "the sun must be expanding the fuel and causing a little overflow...."
Well it was more than a little. Next refuel, the mpg had dropped from the usual 62mpg to 54 mpg.......so that sun had caused more overflow than I had thought.
Lesson No. ####### (numeral too big to fit): Guess I better park it in the shade if I have just refueled...can't be having with giving it to the angels.....

I found that out the hard way.
coming back from a long trip and refueled and then went to eat. Came back fuel pissing out of the tank through the tank cap. What a mess dangerouse too.

Ahhhhhh...I see.....actually, that's pretty good....I think I just might adopt that one.....as long as Hitcher don't mind o' course

Yep, fuel expands in the heat and the hotter it gets the more it expands and yep, you'll loose a fair amount this way.
In actual fact if you want fuel for your money you are best to fill your bike in the morning when it's cold as it also expands in the tanks during the heat of the day.

The difference filling a car tank for instance is quite a bit between the coolest part of the day and the hottest.

my old vtr1000 was prone to "PUD", now i leave a bit of an air gap when filling up

Little bit off topic, but still to do with fuel and temperature...

If I was to fill up at a time where it was cold and everything (say early morning), would I get more gas for my money compared to 4pm?

Since the gas from early morning would expand and make more fuel.

Sounds dumb I know.

yes to more fuel when filling in cool conditions(it's more dense)

shit this is why i have been noticing mpg drop!

What happens if you take the breather hose off? does it simply mean it would spill out of the hole in top of the tank and over the bike? my one is very easy to take off being an NC30.

Yes. Except if it expands out the breather pipe.....and onto the ground....
