    Kaikoura....
Southbay, just 500m out of Kaikoura's citylimits is the turnoff to Southbay.
    2km from statehighway 1 are 2 caltex 24 hours pumps .
1 just before the launching ramp, the other 200 meters further on the wharf itself, where the whalewatch tourist boats are tied up.
    Both pumps are easy accesible.
    Caltex 95 and Diesel creditcard/eftpos.....
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

Thank you for the detail. This one was much harder to pin point, as Caltex doesn't list it, it's not listed in the GPS maps (well, it will be when my updates take effect) but all in all, a hard one to enter when precision is necessary.

If someone has a GPS, it would be real handy to get the co-ordinates of the two pumps, but I've done it roughly for now, based on description (alternatively, for those with zenbu accounts, head on over and search for "caltex south bay" - which will bring up the two pumps, and you can update their location).

Sheet is updated in Post 1.

I quoted directly from the printout, doesn't mention "Otematata Fuel Supplies".

That may have been the previous contractors title!

I will check it out and let you know, if needs be.

Never mind, thank you for adding it to the sheet.

Yes please, it would handy next time you're going past. Nothing beats local knowledge, and I was simply working with what Caltex and GPS data I had.

McKeown Petroleum seems to re-sell Caltex, has deals with them, and a Caltex pdf of site locations (linked to from McKeown website) included them, with the title I mentioned...

I rang "McKeown Petroleum"...."Otematata Fuel supplies" is out dated information!

The information I gave you is correct.

    They also advise:

"Caltex NZ" fuel cards will not work there! (a Caltex NZ generated problem)

"Caltex" fuel cards issued by "McKeowen Group" will work there!

Otherwise as I said earlier: EFTPOS, VISA etc and Fleetcards will work!

This (24hr) service is a recent establishment since the previous closure of the "local" service station and is proving more popular as people are becoming aware of it.

Typical... the number of issues I have run into with the petrol companies...

Is the number of (03) 438 7822 still correct?

Just so you know, I'm not listing fuelcard information, as it seems to change a lot, too many types, and too much info to easily summarise, so sticking with cash/EFTPOS/credit options...

Thanks for the work! I've updated the spreadsheet accordingly.

That phone Number (above) is long out of date!

McKeown Group Oamaru is: 03 4331022. (Oamaru is on the East Coast, 100km away from Otematata.)

There is a (local area) emergency number if you are having trouble at the pumps etc. 0800 800 908, it goes through to McKeown Group Oamaru, 24hrs! (I think!)

Happy to be of help, you are doing a good job for us. Cheers, John.

    Thanks for that John.

I've added the normal landline number into the spreadsheet, and for those running NZOGPS maps, the zenbu entry has the emergency 0800 number loaded in the extra contact details.

The number of fuel stations that have closed up in the South Island over the last ten years is amazing!

Distances between fuel stops down here seem to be much longer than they are in the North Island.

This could be a bit of a trap for bikers on tour and it gets worse after hours!

We do a lot of riding late at night, getting home after watching sports activities etc! (grandkids)

The Tiger's big tank (24 ltr) and good fuel economy helps and we enjoy riding the bike as much as we can all year round.

The information that you are accumulating for us is invaluable.

Yep, there are far more areas in the South Island with limited fuel, than in the north. I guess the South simply has more areas that are remote. And if there is fuel in some places (eg Haast) its incredibly expensive.

In contrast, my KTM drinks fuel faster than medium sized cars, and has a 19L tank, so the information is crucial for me too

I would probably recommend a Garmin GPS, with the open source NZ maps. If you spot errors, like the GPS saying a gas station exists, when it doesn't, it can be updated via www.zenbu.co.nz (the open source maps pull the point information from that site). It means that once you have noticed one is closed, updated the info, and the gps has the new info, you're good to go.

Way better than fighting a big company, that won't update its information

Ok, the list of 260+ stations has been provided to Zenbu, who has kindly batch updated all the stations.

This will filter down to the NZOGPS mapset during the next round up POI updates. Searching fuel for "24hr" should yield the particular stations that have 24 hour access.

Now, can anyone provide more details on this service station: http://www.zenbu.co.nz/entry/1153981-caltex-hutt-road

You can use streetview on the website to see it, but not even Caltex lists the station, so I can't find phone numbers etc, and searches reveal the old hutt rd station in Alicetown...

    Just another update.

The updates have definitely been applied to the NZOGPS maps, the latest release now features all 24 stations as having "24hr" on the end of their name.

The idea of this is, wherever you are, bring up a search for fuel, and simply ask for "24hr". The gps will then search for the closest 24hr stations. Easy aye?

Keep the updates/revisions coming as and when you come across them, and I will aim to keep everything up to date (spreadsheet and gps data).

A bump. TT2000 is around the corner, and summer is coming.

If anyone has updated information on 24hr fuel availability, please let me know. For those using the NZOGPS mapsets, you can search for 24hr, as it's been added to their names...

Murchison and Tapawera are still 24hr EFTPOS.
