    Re-coiling

    Hey all.

    I'm new to this whole fixing my bike myself thing. :slap:

    I've just bought a little scooter to get to and from work. The screw hole that holds the exhaust on has been stripped though and causing it to lose power as all the backdraft is coming out the side. Other than using a heli-coil set - is there any other way I can fix this? I've been told if you use the heli-coil stuff incorrectly it can screw up the whole scooter?

    You could tap a larger sized bolt hole, but that's pretty much what you have to do for a helicoil, so that's not really much of a solution.
    I don't see why the helicoil is viewed as such a potential problem?
    JB Weld is supposed to be able to have a thread cut into it, so if the thread isn't too flogged out, maybe cleaning out the thread and plastering some JB Weld around the inside of the hole and screwing the bolt in might make it tight enough to hold when the JB Weld sets. Alternatively, you could try cutting a thread into the JB Weld with a tap.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Well if you don't drill the hole dead-straight you're kind of farked. And if the helicoil pulls out later (in theory it should be stronger than the original threads, well if it's aluminium) then you're in more trouble again.

    Helicoiling isn't hard, as long as you can drill straight. Kits aren't too bad, I bought one for $50 with the taps, a few coils, little tool to screw them in. Wasn't genuine helicoil though, somebody else.

    There's a couple of Loctite products that Ixion mentioned once, one which forms threads or something, you screw the bolt into it while it's wet or somesuch. I suppose it depends one what exactly you're screwing into -- could you describe it?

    Huh? Helicoils fix a problem, not create a problem. Unless you break the tap off while tapping the new hole because it wasn't started square... that's a whole new ball game.

    I've always made it a policy to use a stud in a helicoiled hole wherever possible, so that next time the part is removed the helicoil doesn't have the option to go with it.

    I imagine you mean Loctite form-a-thread.
    If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!

    Thanks guys.......at the end of the day it is just a cheap crap scooter so I'm going to give the helicoil thing a go!!!!!

    thread fix

    You can tap the stripped out hole to imperial size if you can get the right tap,as a stripped out metric thread makes the right size hole for imperial thread.probibly just as easy to use a heli coil though.

    I'm all for doing it yourself, however a helicoil job should be less expensive to get a local engineering shop to do. They will already have the special taps so it should only cost you for the coil. There is a bit of a knack to it too, I've done lots and fooked up a few before I worked it out.
