Did you sell the KLX? Would it have been an expensive exercise to continue? Honda NZ imported the XRR up till 2006 I believe as road legal models with all the road legal bit & pieces from the factory, the 2007 models was off road only but the Baja DS kit meets the road legal std. e.g. SAE, CE, etc. etc., well for America at least. From general enquiry it sounds that I'll will need to get a brake declaration certificate from a Blue Wing Honda or a Honda dealer while it has the exact same brakes than the road legal models up to 2006 (plus, it's a year newer!).

Spoke to Jerry, really helpful and pleasant bloke.

It would have been quite an expensive exercise. I ended up selling it and buying a deregistered XR650 that was registered in NZ at some point - much easier to re-register.

Brake declaration is quite easy to get. As long as you have the standard brakes on, they will only check that parts are not broken and measure the disks thickness.

Given there are a lot of BRP owners watching this thread, I think this would be the test place to ask this question.

I am planning some big tours (like around australia) and I don't know whether I should kit out my BRP or it would be cheaper to get my hands on an old KLR.

I know the BRP's are reliable bikes and there are aftermarket fuel tanks to increase the range. Even the unconfortable seat is relatively easy/cheap to fix. However, the oil change interval (1000 km) and the weak subframe which drastically limits the amount of luggage are two issues I don't know how to surpass.

At 1000kms between oil changes, I would have to change the oil every day and a half, two days at most.

frame can be re inforced at the weak points so thats no problem but the oil change carry lots or maybe enlarge the compacity with another oiltank and change it every 3k.
Looks like a ADV thread search time

for ADV i'd prefer the L over the R, but i would hands down have the R for super motard .
you can add a kickstart to the L to make it more manly
