Just make sure there is some slack in the decompression cable.
As per earlier post of mine you need to go just past TDC to do the exhaust clearances. If you have done both intake and exhaust at TDC this will probably be the noise you can hear.
If you try again and go past TDC I quarantee the exhaust valves will be loose at this point. I found the best way to check was to stick a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole and let the piston drop about 2cm. (Intake valves are done at TDC)
This is actually contrary to what my manual states but works, was shown this trick by well respected chch bike mechanic after I took my bike to him with same dilemma!
    Good luck

    Wrong TDC?

Thanks man. That did the trick. After a dozen tries on Sunday, I was just about to start banging my head against the wall . Once I checked and adjusted the exhaust valves after the TDC, everything went well.

CONGRATS ED, sounds like you got a great buy. Rapt the guy took your RMX. Look forward to meeting the Pig & can see a Waikaremoana Loop challenge coming up. I had $20 down for the fastest & Johnny on his BRP at 4hr 50min is still tops. Bart keen to give it a go now.
