This has happened 3 times now (yes i should slow down )

What have you guys got away with

probably going to a more important job.......(not all calls require lights and sirens)

I reckon the speedo could be off, I have found since I got my GPS @ 50k Im actually doing 47k (GPS) @100k im actually doing 93k (GPS) @ 180k on the speedo I'm only doing 166k (GPS) So it progressively gets more and more out, I have tested this on several cars /bike with similar outcomes.....I always wondered why the 50 never pull me over as I cruise past @ 115ks

you too!! shit mate they caught me doing that out my driveway just as I hit the roadway... I paid up! ... but I got my own back...I joined them and then they paid me to thrash their bikes for next 22 years!!! no repair bills, no tyres to buy, no gas bills and no speed limits...(but eventually even heaven gets boring so Ive joined the real world again to play with my toys!)

Past a school area was it?

Seem to recall that yes. Barrington St near Cashmere High School. No 40k school zone in fact no sign of a school at all. So unless there is some kind of law on speed that I am unaware of this is 50k zone and not a designated 40k school zone. Don't recall the time but there were no students about. just not too sure how you can tell the speed difference of two k' unless drivers are expected to keep their eyes on the speedo as much as the road.

6. Use of discretion
Police must apply a consistent approach to the enforcement of speeding offences in order to achieve reductions in road trauma and to ensure that our actions are fair and transparent.
A consistent approach enables Police to recognize reasonable variations in speedometer accuracy across the public national vehicle fleet, while providing motorists with certainty of outcome should they drive at inappropriate or excessive speeds. The following principles apply, other than in exceptional circumstances:
• Drivers detected at a speed of 11km/h or more above the appropriate speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.
• Drivers of heavy motor vehicles detected at a speed of 6km/h or more above the appropriate speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.
• Drivers of vehicles towing light trailers detected at a speed of 6km/h or more above the applicable speed limit must be issued with an appropriate infringement notice or summons.
• Drivers of vehicles detected within school zones at a speed of 5km/h or more above the applicable speed limit must be issued with the appropriate infringement notice or summons.
• Drivers of any vehicles exceeding the speed limit by less than these stated thresholds may be issued with an infringement notice if their speed presents a risk to public safety in the prevailing circumstances.
• These principles do not constitute a mandate for drivers to exceed the speed limit. In many circumstances exceeding the speed limit by any amount will pose road safety risks.

7. Responsibilities
District commanders
District commanders are to ensure this guide is implemented in their district by ensuring that:
• Only staff competent in the use of speed measuring equipment is to use these devices.
• All devices required for calibration are presented on time on the allocated day as specified by Police Calibration Services.
• All devices requiring calibration are provided complete with all parts as required by Police Calibrations Services.
• All reasonable measures are taken to ensure that all speed measuring devices are properly looked after and operated correctly.
• Where any radar or laser device that is leased and supplied to a district is lost or sustains damage that is not considered normal operational wear or usage, the district shall pay to replace the device or pay the costs of repair.
• Only certified speed measuring equipment is used in the District.
• Training records are held in the district.
• Breaches of policy are to be reported to the national road policing manager.
It is recommended that these tasks be delegated to the road policing manager in each district.

I may be wrong but I thought the above were operational guidelines. The offence is for exceeding the set speed limit.

In saying that, if it was a camera van on Ka band, 2km/h is very close to the limits of the device. A similar unit I was looking at recently only guaranteed +/-1.6km/h accuracy. All it takes is a couple of court cases from similar tickets that day and all the good work around schools and revenue is gone. It would be interesting for the cops to try and recreate the conditions for that day and measure speed alongside a distance/time device that uses photocells or limit switches.

Bloody stupid behaviour... you wont end up with a ticket, you will end up DEAD, and with any luck you wont kill a child running out onto the road at the same time or end up in the side of a car putting the pasanger in a wheel chair...

As I look at the infingment notice on my desk for $230 I think, I really have to be more awake when I get on the bike in the morning..

At least I wasn't told to 'ride safe..', does that mean that I was riding safe already ?
