    Asking for a better price?

So I have my eye on a bike at a dealership, its late model, low Kms, probably worth the ticket price of 8K but I can't quite afford that this side of Christmas.
So whats the best way to ask for a better price? And whats a reasonable amount to expect to get them to drop off the price?

Any thoughts and personal experiences would be much appreciated as I've had bugger all experience buying second hand from a dealership.

    Cash...cold hard cash speaks loudly.
Go in there with what you are prepared to pay in your pocket and see what happens.

Just ask them if thats the best price they can do.

Then tell them you want the bike but you can only stretch that far if the price comes down a bit.

    Finally, Name your figure.

    Reasonable amount to expect?

None, They don't have to haggle if they don't want to, and if they think the bike well sell at their price or there is little leeway they won't adjust it for you.

    Never hurts to try though.

Yes i agree, My dad always taught me that in most cases the price on the tag isn't always what you will end up paying.

Cash has a way of making people come to the party so to speak.

Don't ask don't get, so like tart said....go in with what you want to pay and just see what happens.

    Good luck

What she said. Assuming you are going into the deal without the complications of a trade-in you are going to be supplying the dealer with $s to feed his overdraft. Buyer's advantage

Shop around & line up 3 or 4 that you would like & use the price from one dealer to beat the others over the head with.
If you have cash (folding type) you can pull a good deal, but only if you are prepared to walk away if they say no.
The trick is to be flexible in your requirements & be prepared for the fact they may not want to play.

Try Trademe or bike trader online & try some private sellers too , they are usually more receptive to cash deals than stealerships

Pretty much what they all said. A good indication of price is the Private market. See what the same bike is fetching on Trademe and T + E (if people still use it).
If their price is competitive another way to skin-the-cat is to get a deal on gear as part of the sale, rather than $ off the bike. Get a free helmet and/or boots and/or jacket.

If you can find out how long the bikeshop has had the bike in stock...the longer, the greater the potential discount.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

make a reasonable offer and be prepared to walk away. If you have to walk away go back the next week and make the offer again if you really want that bike. Might find a better example privately for less also. Doesn't work so well if you have to finance thru the dealer. Cash in hand works best.

that's always a biggy. No trade-in, means you can haggle all you like and there's none of this, "well you only get X for your bike" malarky... Cash is definately the way to go. Tell them what you have (are willing to pay) minus about 1000 and work your way from there... you gotta look like you're giving the dealer something... or like Nosebleed says try gettin free gear...

    good luck

I agree, find out what the market going price is of that bike, keep an eye on trademe, and observe what other dealerships are asking too. Then you can get a good price range of what the bike is really worth. Also getting gear without reducing the price, very effective

As mentioned above, cash, can be effective, especially with the tough times (or so they say) ahead, some dealerships cannot afford to keep stock static.

It will very much depend on what they traded it for, if they want $8k and traded it for $6 you have a good chance of dropping the price a bit.

This site will give you a good idea what they are going for at dealers.

If all the above advice does not work, pop a few buttons and lean over the bike a lot while you talk to the dealer.

Feel free to post practice pictures of this if you want to
