    Waimak River

went up the kaiapoi side of the waimak today to see how far the road goes. ended up getting to dog trial road, went a bit further across a ford then came back. looked at the map when i got home and i almost got to the end - should have kept going

i will be more prepared next time and keep going until i get to depot road and cross at the bridge. will probaly come back the same way. may go further inland but the roads get pretty much the same after a while

if anyone wants to come along let me know and we can try and work out a day. zoom in on the map in the link for more details

I know the south side (ChCh) side goes up to the gorge, perhaps the north side too? I dont think it would bring you in to the gorge but close im thinking.

You have to get to the end and let us know

After that ford, you've got about another 10-15mins worth of riding before making it to (insert name here as I can't remember what it was called) then you turn up the hill and follow the road out to an intersection, turn left and come out by the golf course, turn left again and head towards the gorge bridge. Then you go down the south side, which for about 30-40 mins follows roads like the north does from about 1/2 way on.Once you make it to the intake it gets better from there with single tracks to go down.
For me,doing the north and south sides, taking in as many side tracks as I can find/want to ride it's around 160kms all up,which doesn't sound like much, but after you've beaten a big bike through most of the tracks, you know you've been doing something for the day.

Here's a quick screenshot from cooneyr's adventure map site of where we usually come out and go back in up the gorge end (following the red line of course).
The online map only follows the track down to the intake on the south side because there are so many single track and forestry road options we wouldn't want to say go this way rather than that way when on the town side of Intake Rd.

Just been to the end of the North side today. About 3K's after the Ford you reach the Irrigation Inlet at Browns Rd, then its open fast gravel along Thongcaster rd to Depot rd

What !! you leta puncture stop you? Surely that would only delay you by half an hour.
Not totally sure where I'll be over Easter but I'll keep your ride in mind. If I'm at a loose end I might have to borrow a bike and come along.

ah, yes, I do remember reading that now. Very impressive way to have a puncture.
Even with a new tube that tyre with a hole like that would have been a worry.
