Riding with an injury - safe?

I've got a broken rib but really want to go for a ride.

Went for a kite surf the other day but while I felt "ok" (drugs and adrenaline) I was lets face it, I was shit.

Would it be stupid to ride with an injury that isn't painful except for the occassional deep breath or twist that evokes guttural noises and explicit swearing, but has now been dampened with decent doses of codeine panadol and voltaren? I feel fine and the co-ordination feels ok too. Just look at the eloquence gushing from this post, does it sound like it's from a drug impaired mind?

Or am i best to sit at home feeling miserable and reminisce about the fond memories of climbing into bed at 10:30 on new years eve like a little girl cuddling up to the dog under the stairs.

    ?????

ps - large doses of codeine cause histamine rashes, just in case you need to know that. DAMHIK.

Back in the days when I was into racing, I broke two ribs in a MotoX race. Went to the Dr to get patched up because there was road racing at both Levels and Ruapuna the following weekend. The Dr advised me not to race, but as he knew I would do it anyway, he strapped up my chest so tight I could hardly breathe, and gave me some pain killer in case I needed it. He also warned me not to crash.

So what happened? Well, I low sided at reasonably high speed going into the sweeper at the end of the main straight at Levels. Fortunately, no further injury and a great weekend racing at both venues.

Now I'm older and don't mend so easily, I would still ride with broken ribs. But not with a broken leg or arm.

After the Staging Post KB 'do' I 'somehow' ended up with a broken rib(s).

Worst part was all the roadworks, when the lollipop man had STOP showing it hurt like hell to lift my left foot off the peg and put it on the ground.

Who woulda thunk a broke rib woud be stirred up by foot movement.

That's enough motivation for me.... see yas!

A little concerned over the drugs, the codeine makes me a little groggy but purposefully only had a half dose for lunch. No difference from a long night at work though I guess.

Quasi's back protector should hold everything in place.

Just remember, depending on the rib broken, it's easily possible to pop a lung or artery just from dropping on your side at 5ks. I'd probably still race though... You ave two lungs for a reason and punctures repair!

Have been on pain med's all of my adult life. All jokes aside if you're going out for a ride just be aware that you reactions will be slower than normal and watch out for the sun....drink a heap of water.
I had 2 broken ribs the last time I saw you at the track

The drugs shouldn't be a prob little sis, take what you need and usually the only prob with codiene is that is makes poo hard. Take it especially if it works for you for the pain as it relaxes the area and get into the prunes/kiwifruit. Broken even cracked ribs are not a lot of fun (experience!) but if you take it slowly you should get better in a couple of weeks. - again experience!

Maybe I should invite kiwifruit on the ride!

You don't think this poll is slightly bias?

Codeine, converts to morphine in the body (and we all know Morphine is a hard drug), Morphine slows the brain down, and if you have to much, you can die from respiratory system shutting down.

Broken ribs, it depends on how the ribs are broken, if its a hair line fracture, anyone can continue their everyday activities, usually.

If its a full fracture of the bone and/or cartilage has been broken, you have a crash (dose not matter what speed) and you hit the fractured rib, and it punctures either lung, it all over for you.

Thats my 2 cents, have fun on the track Usarka!

I haven't let my injuries stop me from riding. 20% movement in my left arm and a wrist/forearm cast on the right arm, and I'm still out and about on various bikes.

Not my vicious little two-stroke though. She's a sweetie, but if she senses weakness then my doom will be nigh.

Ribs aren't essential, take some anti-wusstamines.

Dropped the dose of codeine significantly today for that reason - and kind of the original point for starting the thread. Not ok to drink and ride but ok to do narcs? I guess no dramas at the normal dose though they did make me a little drowsy - no worse than after a long work stint.

Fair call, but did you really know that too much codeine can release histamines (not wusstamines btw) and cause a smelly arse biscuit of a rash? I didn't, and to be honest it wasn't that worth the "buzz" to find out.

Might have another hack at that cactus in the garden tomorrow.....

As others have pointed out .... if you crap out ... you could do some serious damage to your health (the punctured lung thing .... not a good look!)

If you are going to ride, strapping yourself up may help.
    Good luck.
