Trail bike(s) covered under contents policy

I had been reluctant to pay the $330 annual premium on my wr450 so I call AA Insurance and they have added my and my sons bike ($13k) to our contents insurance because we are long term customers will both cars and home/contents with them.

They only cover fire, theft - not damage and only while at our home - no insurance while in transits etc. I havent seen the increased cost yet but they thought it would add less than $30 per annum to the premium.

The bikes are specifically listed on the policy and so are the specific conditions applying to them. At least now I wont have be paranoid about every noise I hear in the middle of the night.

I'm a happy camper.

thats a cheap option personally after losin mine i prefer to have it insured no matter where it is although as you say it is still not covered for damage while ridin or in transit (i have to make sure the trailer is damaged as well to get that) even so it still shits me bout bringing it back to work dont want another breakin here.

thats unusual, most the time they will not put dirt bikes on, sometimes kids bike under $2000

make sure you get that in writing, i have had people whos companys have made you turns when they found out what they are, i would get them named on the policy,

Our dirt bikes were under "full cover" for a good 2 years after we first got into bikes. Then we read the policy properly one day. Apparently, in transit, they were only covered for when the trailer flipped over with the bikes still attached to the trailer and the trailer still attached to the car. Firstly, that would be impossible because I'm sure the tie downs would snap if the trailer was sliding along the road upside down, and secondly I think we'd be more concerned with being dead if the car and trailer happened to flip over.

They're under contents now with a different insurance company.

We have insurance for our bikes through AMI. Our values are not much, around 2500 for one and 2 for the other (it is market value so around what we paid for them). They have a special insurance for dirtbikes (not exactly called that). Other insurance places just use the same insurance as a road bike, which is different. Our excess is around $250, it covers: loss or damage by fire, accident (not when riding when on trailer etc), or theft. It must be locked up though. We are paying $80 for cheaper bike and $85 for the other and it is a seperate policy for each, so we get sent a printed form with full descripition of the bike and insured policy. This also covers the bike when in transit as long as it is locked. Therefore when I go up to woodhill I can lock my bike on the trailer, have lunch and if someone pinches it it is still covered.

Also our kids quad bike is on our contents policy. No extra charge, but was listed on it specially.

Ok my wife decided to change us to state and I just asked them to cover the bike under a nominated item on contents and ...... Compter says no.......

I said what if I had a $6000 push bike, and they said fine. Be harder to nick my dirtbike than a pushbike FFS... They said talk to National auto club!! Fuck off!!

wife changed insurance Co. So change wifes.
here give matt a call see what he come up with 5782222 tell i told you to ring might even do you a better deal on your house insurance save me over a $1000.00 on my bussiness cover and im covered for more than i was so we swapped it all over saved on house hold stuff as well.

Star gave me some really good prices and good cover in comparison to the likes of AMI etc, but as my bike is really only worth about 5k now I think that I'll spend what it would cost to insure on security. I'm going to put a big bit of somethig in the ground to lock the bike to and I'm going to install GPS tracking from work into it. I should be able to get GPS tacking units for anyone who wants one for about $250 for the budget one and I'll have to find out for the better ones. THe budget ones just text you, teh flash ones will give you constant updates when the bike moves etc.

How much was Star insurance and what does that cover???? Our AMI is about $80 per bike and covers thef, fire, damaged (not by riding) and in transit.

Star was about $250 for a 5k bike andthat also covers you if your bike came off adn caused damage to anothe car, or if you had a fire and burnt some trees down.

I asked in AMI and was told that they'd only cover 50cc & under on the contents, and only if they weren't used for "competition". Both 50 & quad are now named on the policy. 2004 CRF150 would be $209 fully-comp with a $100 excess, but I'll be shopping around.

This was after I'd called up AMI's freephone number and been told that I'de be fuly covered, no problem by somebody I thought at the time hadn't the faintest clue... Good thing I checked - went to Takapuna office & they got the whole book of rules out. I asked awkward questions which were answered with conviction, at least.

More data for the shoppers out there - plus a warning to check with the front end of the horse and then get it in writing!

AMI only have one sort of motorcycle policy for on or off-road bikes - no differentiation.

This is not quite correct. We are with AMI and have a dirt bike policy, for around $80 a year on my 99 KX125, about $70 on missus 00 CR80. AMI have a special policy cover for pre-existing customers that is different to there road cover (I also have road cover). Our dirt bikes are covered for theft, fire etc from the garage, also covered for transit (including theft, and unlike others they can come off the trailer in an accident as long as they were tied on) . Only thing they are not covered for is when we are riding them and come off.....

This was all done through the Takapuna branch...

I do know my sister tried to get the same insurance and they said no as she was not a pre-existing customer with her insurance with them.

I have all this with mine as well my broker who rides as well pointed out thought they are not coverd if the tie downs fail or they fall off trailer cause you dont tie them down well enough and if this happens sugested might be an idea to drive trailer in to something maybe. lol
