I used to drive all over the place up there for work in a tractor (40km/h) It's not really too far between places at those speeds.. whats your fuel tank range ?

Take back/secondary roads. You will enjoy it more.
Hell, do via gravel roads (like coast rd to Pt waikato etc) and you will reach cult status overnight, and all the boys will love you.

im taking a jerry can
