Accommodation in New Plymouth. Any Recommendations

Im planning a trip to NP at Easter with a mate. We are both going two-up.
Never been there in my life so all is new, but we're thinking of using it as a base. Have got the AA Guides etc but just wondered if anyone has any recommendations as to motel type accommodation in or near NP? Being wusses we dont take tents! Cheers in advance. Ninj.

I don't much like stopping in cities when on holiday as I'm much more comfy in small towns where my walk shorts and long sock with sandals is quite the modern look.

There is a cool camping ground at Opunake (south coast) and one on the south side of NP (coming in from Okura). Both are pretty well on the beach.

    Cheers

I stayed at Burtons Hotel when I was up there in November.
    Old style hotel accommodation.
It was excellent - very cheap and very clean.
It's on the main street of New Plymouth.
    I would definitely stay again.

Quite a nice wee town actually.
    Cheers

Ditto belt Road motor camp. Stayed there 2 weeks ago. Owner has a Blackbird, place has great views over the sea and is beautifully clean. Also a 5 minute walk to the game fishing club where good food and ale can be had at fair prices.

    where to stay

If you dont want to "slum" it at a motorcamp then try the NICE hotel www.nicehotel.co.nz its pretty central in NP and the resturant is one of the best in taranaki.

if you go there make sure you order a glass of murlie rise "mareth" (expensive but worth it) with your meal, its one of the best reds i have ever tasted.

if in the naki you should do the ride out to whanga, plan to have lunch at the pub out there, its about a 3-4 (plus lunch, allow an hour) hour return trip from NP, have a handle of "mates" local brew.

    All the best.

The Landmark Motel is very nice and the owners are biker-friendly folk. An easy stroll to the city's restaurants and down to the waterfront walkway. We've stayed there about three times now and recommend it.

Agree with Hitcher on the Landmark Manor Motel - it's about 20 seconds from the 24-hour Woolworths Supermarket, and about 30 seconds from McDonalds. It's on the corner of Leach and Cameron Sts. We've stayed there about 4 or 5 times now. Very close to town, a few minutes stroll and you're there.

I suggest the in-laws place but... well... it wouldn't go down that well... especially after I sent them a postcard with Gargoyles on the front and "for some reason you came to mind" on the back!

I was lucky, my Mother in Law just laughed and asked which one I thought was her.

... I better not push it though. Enjoy Taranaki, I'd suggest either of the lodging mentioned (Belt Road M Camp is good if you like being by the sea)

    Enjoy!
