1995 883 Iron Horse LAMS approved?

I know the bike doesn't seem to be on the list, but i have a mate on his learners with one of these, and wondering if it is approved or would there be an argument against it's approval? Considering my 250rr seemed twice as fast, I am unsure why it wouldn't be?

I understood there was a 650cc upper limit on engine size as well as a power to weight ratio.

660cc blanket capacity restriction. No, 883 isn't going to comply... ever...

I don't know why people struggle so much to understand the system.

    • Is it under 250cc and not on the prohibited list? OK
    • Is it between 250cc and 660cc and on the approved list? OK
    • Has it been modified in a way that increases the power to weight ratio? Not OK

Other than a handful of equally simple nuances, it's so straight forward that it's a wonder to me that people have trivial question about this scheme. Are people aware that there are these things called "web sites" that you can find this type of information?

    LAMS-approved motorcycles include:

All motorcycles with engine capacities of 250cc and under, except for those on the LAMS-prohibited list above.

Fully electric powered motorcycles with a power-to-weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and under (this includes all fully electric powered motorcycles registered on New Zealand's Motor Vehicle Register as of 1 June 2012).

All motorcycles manufactured prior to 1960 with an engine capacity of 660cc and under.

The following list of motorcycles with engine capacities between 251cc and 660cc - these motorcycles must be in standard form as produced by the manufacturer. They cannot be modified in any way to increase the power-to-weight ratio.

Every so often they add (all) or (all Variants) instead of listing each bike.

    Matchless All up to 650
Norton All pre 1984 up to 650
    Suzuki GS500 (all variants) 500

Other than that its 100% as it reads.
