Get the base model, spend the extra coin you save on an Ohlins unit, and you'll end up with something that is better than the R model, for less moolah.

Err, wouldn't replacing front and back be a wee bit more than $2k? I've seen $2800 mentioned above.

Plus you do get the brakes on the R to better match the upgraded handling.

And call me fruity, but I like the Matt Graphite colour scheme.

If you actually do a lot of track then I'd say get the R - but then I'd suggest that the R is inferior as a track bike to the Daytona.

The brake upgrade will only be an advantage to you for serious track time - where you are accelerating and braking hard out for significant periods of time (you won't experience brake fade etc). Otherwise they can actually cause less experienced riders grief - in a hairy situation grabbing a handful and going for a header over handlebars is not much fun by all accounts.

Even with the suspension on the R the upgrade is still on the cards - it's not hard to get a daytona shock on ebay cause all the guys on Daytonas have found their Daytona shock though adjustable, is still not great. You'll also need to replace it after a while.

In the front while adjustment would be nice, with a reshim, revalve and springs you'll get something much more suitable for your purposes.

Ring Norm Cobb at Suspension Tech and ask him about so called "fully adjustable suspension". He'll tell you it's a misnomer and it's not much use having a clicker if your internals are still shit to start with and the ride is harsh as buggery

Ideal would be buy the R (extra two grand) have the adjustment and then do the $3000 upgrade on top of that.

Oh and with the paint - touch ups are out of the question, stone chips are there for good, the matte will go shiny on contact areas etc.

Start with a good ride on the base model, then speak to Norm or Robert Taylor about your concerns. The suspension on the base model is a compromise but it's not dire - but don't be conned into thinking that the R will be as good as a custom suspension upgrade

Thanks guys for good advice, I'll get the standard black, and when I'm ready will upgrade bits. I know I'm not ready to push the bike to its limits anytime soon.

On that basis, would be keen to hook up with owners for rides soon.

One more thing, is it worth getting belly pan, so far I've decided on gel seat and fly screen/visor. Pan does give the bike a slightly racier/smoother look.

Gubb had a rough day yesterday, and had a few too many beers to compensate.

That and my phone only seems to let messages through in groups of 10 or more.

I'll see you at the Track.

Well, I've got it, as I write this post I'm looking at it in the garage via the dedicated camera I installed this morning so I can look at it over the net anytime ...

Rode up to Puhoi via new motorway extension and back, and did it like a big time nana.

Definitely a good idea to get the gel seat if it works as expected, my ass was a bit tender at the end of the ride on the standard.

Bike sounds great, even at the low revs I'm supposed to stick to while I break it in, and man you can feel the difference in nimbleness over the GSX650F. I think the Suz would still be more comfortable for long trips though..

Anyone find their seat gets a bit warm, or is it just this weather - don't think the Suz seat gets a noticably heated.

Bit of a bugger there's no fuel gauge, but I guess it's easy enough to pop the cap and have a look.

Give you arse a few weeks to acclimatise - both to the feel of it and the heat (there is a wee bit of heat transfer which you notice more in the summer).

You've got a 5 litre reserve which I'd trust for 50 kms after your fuel light comes on. I usually get around 200km of spirited riding before my fuel light but
I've just done pipes, K&N and tune so will monitor comsumption again.

Good luck restraining yourself over break in period
