Did you skive off work today and go for a ride instead?

Weather was too good for working, so I went to Mt Maunganui, had lunch, came home again. About 440km of riding in brilliant weather, a totally great day!

It all started on Tuesday night when I won an auction on Tard Me - seller in Mt Maunganui and me in Auckland, I was going to get them to post the item, but then I thought "what the hell, why not go for a ride". I checked the weather forecast and chose Thursday (today), told the guy I wanted to pick up the item, he said his wife could take it to work and I could pick it up from there.

    Today:
Left Auckland around 9:30am - weather looking great.
Got to Bayfair around lunch time and picked up my Tard Me item from seller's wife. Grabbed lunch from nearby cafe, it was really nice too! Back to riding, headed off home. Stopped in Paeroa for gas as I had done 320kms since filling near home (averaged 25.2 km/l). With a full tank and zeroed trip meter I decided to see how good I get my average km/l up to, and how long I could ride economically before getting too pissed off. For 15kms I rode with the speedo reading about 90kph, which is probably really about 80kph - achieved an average of 31.4 km/l in those 15 kms. Enough of that, sped up and made my way home (still averaged better than 25 km/l).
Got home in Auckland around 3:10pm - weather still great.

I enjoyed the day and it beat the hell out of working!
(I am self employed and the work I didn't do today will get done tomorrow)

Nothing very exciting, just a 2nd hand Maglite torch in good condition for less than half the price of a new one. They are pretty tough and it would have survived quite well in the post - but where is the fun in sitting at home waiting for the post when I could go out for a ride on a lovely sunny day.

Many people have gone for a ride on a much flimsier excuse than that.

Well, I know that I have - usually on the weekend though.

Like the day that the weather was fine, so I went off for a ride. As I rode I thought about where I might go, the previous time I had headed north, so I went south. While riding south I decided I would head to Coromandel, got there and had an icecream, then I went to Whitianga, then through Kopu and back home. You don't always need to organise something or have a plan or even a destination as you start. Sometimes you just think "it's Sunday, the weather is nice, I'm not doing anything in particular - time for a ride!"

That's probably why I have done almost 12,000 kms since getting the scooter five months ago.
