Delaying a speeding fine payment

The speeding fine due date was yesterday, however I like to delay my payment for a month.

I know I left it a little late and should have wrote in before the due date, but what can I still do before more costs get incurred or has it already happened? Btw, what would be the best thing to say?

I know there's also a Traffic infringement line (in Welly) for customers like myself.

*Edit, this is for the Reminder notice. I am actually ringing up the Infringement bureau now for an extension. How it works it that if you don't pay on the reminder notice due date, the police forward it on to the courts (Ministry of Justice) and an extra $30.00 bucks get chucked on. Good thing is I just rang Ministry of Justice 'Fines online, apply for time to pay' hotline on 0800 658 952 and they double checked my details with them and nothing under my name was forwarded. *Edit 2, Just rang up Infringement Bureau on 0800105777 and they gave me another month. Easy as that, do note that my fine was over due by 1 day and gave me bit of grace on that. It can never hurt to ask!

Once it has occurred court costs, then you can arrange payments.

I dont know why you can't arrange payments before the court costs are incurred, go figure...

Easy answer, move house!!! I did this and managed to not pay my fine for over 6 months. All legally of course! Also the police cocked up...

Got a fine, forgot to pay so thats one month. Was expecting reminder notice, never came, another 6 weeks. Moved house. 6-8weeks later recevied FINAL NOTICE in mail after being picked up in the mail redirection. Had extra court costs.

Went to courthouse and filed an injunction on the grounds they got my address wrong so never received reminder notice. Granted. Forgot to pay, another month. Actually received 2nd reminder notice. Paid with 2 days to go!

So all up this process took farken ages for the police to get my money

Strange things is that they send two reminder notices before sending it to courts ... 1st is the pink one and second the next month is blue.

The sooner you pay the fine, the sooner you get... and the sooner you lose the demerits...
Like parking tickets... ignore them and they come back to bite you in the wallet....

Actually, demerit points are effective from the day of the offence, not the day of payment or conviction. The points get allocated on the date of payment or conviction, but they are effective from the offence date.

So, delay payment as long as you want, it will make no difference to the eventual effect of the points.

Alternately, don't get caught speeding, and you'll never have to worry about either the payment or the points. It's a no brainer.

I did this quite by accident. Got a letter some years ago about $800+ dollars worthr of fines from 10 years earlier. I laughed and laughed and laughed.

I think they have to allow for postage, I believe you only have to mail it on the due day, not for them to get it.

question... if you over pay the fine by say $12.00 dollars by cheque.. and they send you back the overpayment by cheque and don't bank it.. does this stop demirt points been removed til the overpayment cheque is presented ? or not as until you have presented their refund it is still on the computer is been incomplete... true or false..

Its called the Postal Rule, one of the few things i remember from my brief delving into law. As soon as you post the letter it is considered received, even if the other party does not receive it!! You can imagine all the trouble this can and does cause.

there should be no reason that it should hold up the demerits. As mentioned earlier the demerits apply from the day of offense, they last for 12 months so I would think that they expire that day 12 months later also.

Why would it take you 12 months to cash it unless you lost the cheque?
