    In case you didn't know...

The Kopu bridge was built in 1927 and it still opens to let the ferry through.
Its a pretty slick manouvre...they stop the traffic [obviously]..the ferry already waiting....bridge opens...boat roars through and bridge closes.
Takes no more than a minute or 2.

Lived in Thames or around it for all my life and only ever seen it open once that I can remember. The new one is being planned out aparantly though. I think it was 23 mill? Yay... Even larger hordes of jaffas in motorhomes and sportscars towing jetski's to hone in on the town It is quite impressive though, for such a old bridge. It has really bad repairs though. I bloody swear the filling they make only makes things worse. Can't help that the traffic lines sometimes reach whole kilometers back.

    I didn't know that. Interesting.

Did you happen to read about the Green Party complaining about the new bridge? What morons.

I know I just made a crack about it myself, but what can they complain about? Only thing I can think of is more crayzeh motorsickle drivers turning up to the pub in faster succession

The first photo taken today...this one taken some months ago..

Yea the greenies want this old bridge kept as an historic site,so it will be kept closed but still have to open to let boats through that will be able to go under the new one...Guess who will have to pay for that...?

Longest que I've seen is 7kms on the Auckland side..

How does it work? Does it lift slightly before turning to allow for the turning piece to miss the solid sections?

That muddy estuary and antiquated bridge are like going to the worlds most beautiful house and having to enter via the bathroom renovations.

You mean they will close the actual bridge? As in the whole road after it that leads into kopu? It would be like deserted or just a dead end at the bridge...

I like it. I don't see the problem. They should leave it alone, there's better uses for money.

I'm not sure but my guess is that it lifts to "unlock" it before it turns...I will try and find out...I watched today but couldn't see any sign of it lifting.
I know that when its closed [that is closed for boats] it is rock solid, even when you drive a 40 ton truck over it.
