Getting stuff in from the states...

Hi all,

I need some forks, can't get any here or from Aus, however, they pop up every week on EBAY. The Issue there being that no-one who has them will ship offshore.

Does anyone have a buddy I could have forks shipped to internally in the US, (I'll prepay via credit, just need a US address to get them out of the store), and then I'll arrange for shipping from them to me ?

Anyone ever got bike bits out of the US ?... Let me know your experiences with this. If there's someone who does it via a business here let me know too.

You should be able to just replace your springs and internals locally. Racetech, Progressive and Ohlins all have a presence in NZ, and you should give Robert Taylor a ring at Hawera M/Cs before you go all extravagant. I transformed my old TRX's front end for $700 worth of progressively wound springs, and slightly heavier fork oil.

Could be expensive to post, over size and all. Interestingly I bid on a complete CBR600RR front end that was going for like $300US, guy had no problems freighting but thought it would be around $150US when I emailed him about it. I missed out on the auction but then got an email from ebay, asking if I had dealt with the guy and basically warning me off, I'm guessing the parts were probably from a stolen bike. Some guys will send some can't be bothered with the extra hassle.

Sorry can't help with your particular problem,but I do get things in from the US quite regular.I deal with a Co' that does mail order all over the world and have always had very good dealings with them.
Maybe you could try contacting a dismantler over there and see if they will buy on your behalf an then forward the parts to you.
This would mean a certain degree of trust on your behalf, but I've found the Yanks to be very good in that respect.

Yup, these are all about $175 US... so not too expensive... My internals are fine but the legs and uppers don't appear to be round tubes anymore so leak a bit and are extremely stiff in action

Beware buying bikes off trademe if you can't look at them first. Just bad timing for me as I couldn't get out over Xmas due to being the only sad bastard available to work, so pretty much bought it sight unseen for a project bike. I got what I wanted I guess.

Actually, the guys I've been looking at are all dismantlers, they just don't want to deal with non US customers. I'll do a bit of hunting around, someone should do it.

I have a mate who brings stuff in from the USA a couple of times a year. He packs it into a container either in NY area or round LA. He has a mate who collects it for him and when there's a stack it's containerised and sent. Keeps the shipping costs down but can be more delay than wanted. The California guy did ship a piston set to me airfreight once, but they don't cost much to send.

With a little planning ahead I'd suggest getting tyres from the US too. Cheap as chips (about 50% of the price for the 020 front I brought back recently). All I gotta do is get it fitted.

Funny part was checking onto the plane out of Washington... the guy behind the counter told me I'd have to sign a waiver for fragile goods... it wasn't packaged up to his approval.

I told him it's a TYRE. They use these things to keep BIG SHIPS from hurting themselves against warves, they use them in all manner of situations to prevent damage, not to mention the rigours of their everyday use.

He insisted, I signed and (to the surprise of no-one involved) it got all the way home ok.

anyway... I digress.

Yes, get things in from the States (or wherever) if possible. Lots of money to be saved but the time can be a pain, and of course any costs/efforts involved in fitting will still be applicable.
