Have anyone been through this part of SH1 recently? Are there still loads of grit from recent roadworks up through there?

They are doing a lot of small patch repairs north of Amberley this week, so I expect that there will be additional amounts of loose spots all over the place,
Just watch out for light grey colour changes , newly laid patch repairs

I would not say loads of grit, as they swept away the majority of it off a couple of months after they finished. But there is still a bit of gravel that has loosened after they finished on the Hundalees. And the surface is still a bit loose. I would test it when you get to where they were working on the road.

Road is in a pretty reasonable state mate
If you're going to Kaikoura. go via Culverton/Waiau, up the inland route...
When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
The road is as sweet as.It's the Amberly cop you have to watch out for!

I've got miserly tourettes and I don't give a fuck.
Cheers guys. I just wouldn't want to take a faired bike through conditions as they were mid-december. Hell, the fresh tar and generous servings of gravel was bad enough on the car to be honest.
...only thing is that the 'tards clutch cable broke and I may not be able to get that sorted out before tomorrow afternoon. Well, I'll see how it all turns out. Cheers!

and the Rangoria ones who go up as far as Waipara.
basically you have to have the attitude that Waipara is the city and you can't speed after that.
I will be coming back this way on Saturday (depending on time I may come back via the inland road, havent decided yet). I shall report!

The road isn't that good - between tar bleeds, left-over gravel from roadworks and grit strewn over the tar bleeds most of the fun in the corners over the Hundalees has been reduced significantly.
Add ongoing roadworks (two light-regulated ones) and two stretches of new seal (totalling about 10 kms) with temporary speedlimits of 50 km/h or less and it becomes a bit boring really.
Went up along the inland road - plenty of grit and tar-bleeds along there as well... and lots of sheep (unmotorised versions) on the road too. So reduced fun along there as well. Would be a lovely road up through there if only you could trust the surface.

The turn off to Weka Pass has just been re-seal in a few parts and in the Pass it's self as well.
Feel the fear and do it anyway
