    Cheap Jack *@%#! road repairs

Rode SH39 From Whatawhata to Ngaruawahia yesterday morning as part of the morning fang...man there's some crappy road surfacing on that bit of road. No wonder I don't venture there very often...

One of the things they have along there (and in many other parts 'round here come to that) is a cheap jack shit repair to tar bleed. They lay down two wheel tracks worth of new chip seal over the bleed, which end up raised above the rest of the road surface and leave nice shiny road between and to each side of the new strips. Is this unique to the Waikato or do other penny pinching areas do the same?

Personally I hate these bits - OK as long as you follow the piece of chip but they allow no margin at all. So you can't really follow a decent line through the corner. And they tend to be rather temporary in my experience as well. Soon enough the bleed creeps back through and they are as useless as before.

    OK OK - rant over...

I'm learning to ride over these roads i guess its best to learn how to ride over this crap sooner rather than later! The one bit that shits me is the shiny patch right on this corner heading up the hill. Sadly it is not shown on Google maps but you can see it a mile away and its rather hard to miss without going too wide.

Gang prospects/members are a big % of Waikato roading crews now.
    Don't expect much.

Ah, so that's where the money goes. I assume the gang headquarters have nice thick tarmacked drive to park up on. The road over the Rotoma's is crap too, come a bit of warm weather and it'll start peeling up again.

SH39 south of Whatawhata is better surfaced than the Whatawhata - Ngaruawahia stretch. If heading south watch the second RH corner marked as 75km/hr - plenty of road eczema there...bike tends to hop alarmingly towards the gravel verge....

Had another look at your shiny patch (above) this morning heading both north and south. I found it scarier going south for some reason - downhill probably. Was not too spooked going norf.
That whole section of road needs to be fixed properly - last season they layered some of those bloody strips on it which lasted all of four weeks or so in the summer heat. Cheapskates!

Welcome to our world. We live in a place where absolutely no consideration is given to the finished result of a road repair, no matter if it is a rural local body pays to repair road, or the main State Highway. Honestly there are parts of SH1 around that are frankly dangerous to bikers. I counted the different surfaces through a sweeping 100 kph corner on Saturday 8, yes 8 different types of surfaces to contend with in patch and strip repairs.

A couple of months ago, some roading contractor must have picked up a tender to repair the roads locally. We now sport some of the finest tar snakes I have ever seen. Mid corner, straight lines, main street, open highway, you chose, you will find them.
