So, who wants to go for a blat up muriwai beach?
We will enter from the gravel 4wd access just north of the muriwai swimming end of the beach, and get a fair distance north before beginning any shenanigans.
When we approach the "half a tank of fuel/incoming tide" point we'll head back.
All in all it should be a fun blat up the beach
Tide Timing:
High tide is at 10am, Low at 4pm, High again at 10pm
SO, if we
- meet outside engineering on symonds street at 10am
- leave uni by 10:30am
- stop by BP Kumeu for gas at 11am
- get on the beach at noon
we should be set with plenty enough beach to begin the run, and no real concern for being caught by the tide.
then...
- have lunch and turn around at 2 or 3 unless fuel dictates sooner
- get off the beach at 4 or 5 at the latest
- be home in time for dinner/beers
sorted!
Remember it is salty, gritty, somewhat dangerous (mind you there isn't any cheesecutters, blind corners or poles) and the tides can always surprise you. There ARE cagers and I can tell you from experience they can be just as retarded as the ones on the road.
There is a very shallow stream crossing on the beach - video of access here
Put plenty of lube on those chains before and after and be sure to give your bike a very thorough wash afterwards
Dirtbikes welcome - I will be using one myself - but it IS classed as a road so technically you need a licence/rego etc. never had trouble in the past but no promises.
Sprotsbikes not recommended but we won't be stopping you - remember your bike will be sandblasted and if you get tank slappers on the road the sand will be much, much worse.
A farm quad/4WD would be good to carry petrol, or maybe a bike with a pack rack will do. most small bikes and motox bikes will only last 2 or 3 hours tops to a tank, and while we should be ok, I dont think the AA will go to the south head while the tide is coming in.
Due to tides, the rain date will be saturday the 7th of february
