I had no issues with this rack on the SCAR - it worked a treat! In fact a slightly taller/bigger capacity backpack would still have been fine, maybe 30/35L. I think my 50L backpack may have been too tall for the rack tho so left that at home and travelled light! I didn't carry a sleeping bag as we hired linen at the motor park but that would've easily gone in another gear bag onto the horizontal part of the rack.

Hope to see you on the ride!
I will probably have a new bike before this ride, but I do like the idea of that sort of rack. And I agree traveling light will be the best option.
Might look at rack/bag options when I purchase.

It is a papa track so I wont try it in the wet solo.

Mmmmm ......this is starting to sound interesting, i could even be persuaded to take the Fri off work and meet you guys half way up.

Which side of the island were you thinking of coming up as the Wanganui River Rd and then K SLIDERS matahiwi track would interest me enough to get my butt down there

Runs from Matahiwi on the Wanganui River Rd back over the para para`s to the main Rd ( state high way 4 ) by Raetihi.

If you type in matahiwi on www.maps.google.com and the track will come up.

Google maps says that the track is 21 kms long. Sounds like a goody.

just checked out he road, or the aera where it is, must have been a foresty block in its day, theres like a hundred little roads in there as well.
it sorta cuts the wanganui river road in half, but thats cool, could do the other half another day.
motoxnut, the other treck, is it thomsons track, is that on the east side of halmilton. just trying to get a berring on distance between events. so i can judge time and fuel distances.
im defently going up the wanganui river road, as ive never been through there before. what happens after that, ill just follow the front wheel, just hope it knows where to go.....

Thomsons track runs through from Te Aroha over the Kaimai ranges to Tauranga but is not really doable on an adventure bike. It has huge holes in it filled with water & mud courtesy of the local 4wd guys and even on a MX bike it is a bit of a slog.

after this rain you'll be needing a life jacket and someone with an argo to get you out. great lot of fun but i wouldn't atempt it on a larger ADV bike unless it was a long hot dry spell when the bog holes are only 1/2 a metre deep

Nup - only about 10 of 90 are up on the site. I have the rest to put up some day. One day I'll get off my arse and get some more tracks up.

    Cheers R
