I fell on me bum...

Actually got hit from behind while stopped at a pedestrian crossing - we were rolling through a few vehicles at a time (Tasman St) as high school students trickled across the crossing. Pulled up to the line, in 1st holding the clutch in, and suddenly the scoot flies out from under me and I'm on the road.

Didn't even hear a bang - then got up and realised the red car that had been tailing me through the 30kmh roadworks had hit me.

Bruised bum and shoulder, thankfully on one side and not the tailbone...helmet didn't even touch the road.

Funny thing is, a mate rode by a little later, then came back and stopped to see if I was ok - because I was standing talking to the cop he initially thought I was being busted for something.

Feeling very lucky on Feb 5th, the day a motorcyclist was killed and a cyclist knocked over by a drunk driver.

Tasman St would be one of the nastiest streets for distractions to traffic. Narrow as heck and blind rises every 100m.
Are you gonna now work out a way to secure your mirrors back on the scoot?

Glad your ok.... what was the drivers story? let me guess..... didn't see you stopped right in front of their eyes? hope they were very apologetic.

True about Tasman St - but it happened on the flat section!

And I was on the scoot with mirror. I was still looking at the pedestrians and hadn't even put my foot down yet.

Anyway, it was pretty clear cut, got a letter from the police sent the same day, he's getting an infringement notice for failing to stop short, and he'll get my bill for repairs early next week...

After I let fly at him (verbally) I limped to the side of the ride and cried. Didn't really hurt, just got a shock.

He picked up the scooter and tried again to apologise but I asked him not to talk to me just then, I was too angry.

A cyclist and another lady got his address details for me. Young overweight guy with a very Irish name.

I reckon he wasn't paying attention, and just presumed I was going through - probably would have hit a pedestrian if he hadn't hit me.

I bet the AA didn't properly cover how to deal with that collision possibility

It's difficult enough to avoid erratic cagers in front, without having to deal with the blind from behind.

I hate the Tasman street traffic so I avoid it. I also get really p'ed off with the way buses in particular like to park right up against your tail light. There should be a law about distances between MV's when stopped. I have also been in buses numerous times when they have rolled backwards several metres so if the guy whom hit you was behind them, he would have been toast.

I always put the bike into neutral when I am waiting at lights. Allows me to sit up and limber up.

But you must be thinking of another Tasman St? This is the street that runs from John St to Buckle St - speed humps, residential, then a backdoor Massey Uni entrance, and now they're building a new supermarket near the Basin reserve. No buses on this road.

This is the best route for my trip to Jervois Quay - a direct line all the way through the city.

Glad you are ok Jess, Not too much you can do in that situ, a friend got nailed the same way, saw it coming but couldn't go for peds. This is how peds get killed when they should be safe on a crossing.

i was riding along main dunedin street on a sunny afternoon near the center of the city (george street outside knox church), a car coming towards me had stopped and double parked, so traffic behind him started to drive around him so crossing the centre line coming towards me... I pulled out of the righthand tyre wear on the road and onto the left tyre wear on the road.... thinking at 20km with my head light on ill be seen...... well..... "Mr Taxi man" parked on my side of the road decides to open his drives door....... I had never flown over a car door before that day....!!!

Taxi drive was done for it and payed for all repairs and the copps pinged the other idot for double parking as well....

I hate TAXIS!!!

Taxi's... you can't beat the fact that they are NOT legally required to carry insurance (lucky in this case he was).
I had my *parked* car written off, the week before xmas a few yrs ago by a brand new taxi while in the suburbs.

The taxi only managed to push my car a whole car length forward (and there was a parked car in front of mine too!)
And it only took 6 weeks for my *previous* insurance company to pay out.

Ugh, understand that feeling. Nice one for letting him know just what you thought of him though!

I always pull my clutch in, and only put it in neutral if I need my left hand for something. Are there arguments for which is better if there's a possibility of being rear ended?
