Insurance is a strange animal. What you have the bike insured for and the amount you pay insurance for has nothing to do with what the bike is worth when it is written off. (Apart from in very special customised cases where the specific bike has been accessed and a amount has been agreed upon by owner and insurance company) The value of the bike is depending on what you would pay for it today.
Here: Lets say you in 2005 purchased a s/h 250cc bike for $4K. In beginning of 2009 you crash it. They will check what such bike is worth today and compare that to the cost of the repair, and the outcome is most probably that as it today is worth $2.5K that is what you get in your hand. If you have done "upgrades" and costly alterations and you have not informed the insurance company, then they are not considered when the claim is settled.
And if you have pissed off the Red baron guys they will most probably tell the insurance company that a s/h of yours is only worth $1.5K today and that is all you get in your hand. (But as the Insurance company will use more then one source when determining the worth of the bike you should still get close to the $2.5K).
After having looked in to it, looks like a decent Kawa ZZR 250 from early-mid 1990's is worth between $3.5K and $6K. So I would say you would get $4K in hand.
Use $3.5 to buy another bike and $500 to buy back your one, and suddenly you are better off.
Good Luck.
Awesome post Conquiztador, cheers:
Unless I've done something very naughty I'm not aware of I can't think why the RB boys would have it in for me, but I hadn't considered that as a factor
As I only bought the bike three weeks ago (shame is me) I can't imagine it's depreciated too much in value (apart from the bin of course)
I'm investigating the market, seems to be some interesting nekkid beasts out there for about $3.5k. I'd love to buy Tox back and make her a project, but I don't have a garage to keep her in. So if anyone else fancies something to do...

Bad luck on the crash ma'am..
If you could live with riding a fast chainsaw an rg would be sweet, 2g for a good one ? awesome fun to ride, pretty quick for a tiny bike..
I have the same problem ie no bike anymore, have reverted to more primitive means of transport, pedal powerfailing that, I have a life-long pass for the wae-wae express..
Yer, pretty sad state alright, poor ToxSad to say, but i suspect a write off.
Kinda pains me to see that, when there's really nothing wrong with the bike, just a bit of cosmetics.
How many times do i gots ta tells ya? Bikes and babes are best naked!(and if you can get a two-for-one deal there, i will shout you a

IT'S PEANUT BUTTER JELLY TIME!!!
Do the peanut butter jelly, peanut butter jelly, peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat!
Still no word back, it's all still being priced up and so forth. Another weekend bikeless? What on earth am I going to do with myself?![]()

Oh yeah its going to take forever aye
Then I could get a Kb Tshirt, move to Timaru and become a full time crossdressing faggot
Well, I've explained how vital the bike is to me getting around and that it's my sole form of transport. I'm hoping that and the fact I will be phoning them every day might move things along...

Worth a shot, being female and a mixture of pathetic and forceful does work from time to time...

I dont do bike insurance (never done). If I crash I deserve to pay.
But I always reconned that if I was to start a Insurance company for bikes, then I would have as part of the conditions that we, the WFC Insurance, would provide you with a old 250cc bike while your Humbaswish 1900 is being fixed, just so you can get to work to earn the dosh to keep on paying us.
But surely this has alreay been thought of... anyone...
Ditto, and it's more than paid off. I recall my only other crash in late '92 cost me about $800. My recent one, not sure yet - but it sure won't be more than the equaivalent of a few years premiums and certainly not 16 years worth. But there are people who constantly crash so I guess it's worthwhile for them. I'm glad I'm not subsidising them, although plenty of saps must be.
I know with some car policies you can pay a pittance extra to have a rental car provided in the event yours becoming unusable through a crash or during the period of the repair itself so you're never without transport.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!
The bike insurance dude has take a half day so is not available until Monday. Another weekend bikeless and transportless. Woe is me...

How long have you been on KB now? Shouldn't there be a reasonable gaggle of young men with working motor vehicles sniffing around?
Don't go fucking up my long-running Mean Time To Snagging average of single white females on KB, miss. You've got about another month to run before you fall outside the standard deviation.
kiwibiker is full of love, an disrespect.
