"... my bike is legal." Finnaly after 8 bloody months I now have a thin piece of aluminum on the back of my bike making it legal. Most of you know my story but for those who don't....
I moved here from the states back in June, spent 3 months waiting for my stuff to arrive from the shipping company and all that, then another 3 months waiting for parts from Aussie so I could get my bike running. Had to replace the idler-gear set that connects the started to the main crank-case. got that sorted and then took the bike in to get regoed. Here is where my main problem hit. For some reason they couldn't find my VIN# in thier system but eventually found it was in the system it was just wrong. Turns out that the port in Houston TX had written down the wrong number as well as the Tauranga port. They told me that the moving company was suposed to take care of it. So I call the moving company (bloody stupid crown!!) and tried getting it sorted with them. So I email our agent and told them about the wrong number they email back saying they are sorry and it will be fixed imediatley. About a month later after still not hearing anything about it (called and email several times) I decided to go beyond the moving company and talked to MAF. Called up and talked to a fellow here at the Hamilton office and found out that the bike had missed the initial border check due to neglagence on the part of the moving company (bloody stupid crown

) and that the only way I can get around this was to file for an exemption of border check. MAF comes out and does a post border check on the bike since they needed to do that for the exemption the day after I called them. Get all that done and the paper-work sent off t LTSA. Here stuff slows down again. I call them every other day and finnaly get told that they need to have an inspector out to look at the bike. I say ok when can that be? They saw if we don't have someone out by this weekend then it will be sometime in the next month. Well at the time I was a bit upset that it would take that long but I'm like sweet ok.Then decide that I want to do a run down to Wellington on my own and the only time I can is this weekend so I call LTSA back up and try to get someone to look at my bike sooner. Get ahold of them and try traking an inspector down. After 3 days of being on hold and transferd around the country I finnaly get ahold of one.(this was on monday) I set an appointment for him to come on thursday and sweet. He comes and all he does is glance at the bike and write down the VIN#, I'm thinkin "that's it???" Ok whatever get that done then he goes back to his office and emails the info back to LTSA in Palmerston North, and asks them on my behalf to fax the info on to the testing centre ASAP. I go into the testing centre at 9am this morning and so far nothing so ok I come back home and hop on the horn with LTSA again. After a few more hours of phone hopping it still isn't resolved but I have to go to a job interview so I glance at everything I had written down about who I was talking top and how far I got and get ready to go.(job interview went great by the way and I start at 7am monday morning. Come home and call LTSA again and find out that everything is done and all I have to do is re-present my bike at any testing centre so I call the testing centre to confirm this. Not sure if the lady that answered the phone knew what was goin on though after all the visits I have paid them in the last few weeks most of them know me by my first name and me with them. So no help on the phone. I stop for a bit and eat lunch then decide screw it I'm going down there. I hope on the bike and go, get there and the peaple who had been helping me thus far were waiting for me. I sign and fill out some more paperwork and then I get it. The pretty, shinney, lovely piece of aluminum with 5 numbers and letters that idedntifies my bike in NZ, along with a couple of pieces of paper that say "THIS BIKE IS LEGAL" in more words.
Then on the way home to mount my new plateI glance in my mirror. (I have been riding the bike around town and out to Tauranga and back and have never been pulled over) Behind me is this car with flashing lights on the top.
Pull over and he comes up to me and says' "Son, you dont have a proper numberplate this thing so It's not legal to ride on the road"
I reply' "But, but officer my bike IS legal" and I pull the number plate out from under my jacket and the Rego info and WOF stickers out of my pocket.
Talked to the cop a bit more and he lets me go but tells me head straight home and get that thing mounted s here I am waiting for my drill to charge up so I can mount my plate.![]()
