Wanganui - Waikanae - Akatarawa - Hutt Valley - Paekakariki

Had a great outing a couple of weeks ago from Wanganui to the Hutt via the 'shortcut through the Akatarawa Road. It was a beaut day with warm, fine weather on both the West and East coasts. The ride over the Akatarawa road from Waikanae to Upper Hutt was great - just allow for a slower than expected ride with very tight corners and the width of the road only enough to let a car and bike pass each other (carefully).

I headed up the hills out of a hot summer's day and found the cloud sitting in the hilltops, eventually pulling over to put my NZDF rainwear on to save getting soaked with precipitation. Anyway, after clearing the road at The Hutt, I took the wets off in barmy weather again. I remembered why we take extra gear when we go for mountain walks! Never expected it this close to the coast though.

Looped back via the Paekakariki Hill - now that was a blast after the slow ride over the 'mountain'. Beautifull sweeping bends and a view to die for above the Kapiti coast.

The drag was hitting bumper to bumper traffic from Paekakariki to Levin, basically. Not so bad on a bike, just 'pottered through' the banked up traffic so as not to upset anyone and just enjoyed the ride. Took an offshoot towards Tangimoana, coming back to the main road at Bulls then home to Wangaz.

A good break from the house!

Nice loop, a few weeks ago I did the Moonshine road which runs from the middle of the Haywoods to Upper Hutt and then through Akatarawas to Waikanae. I must admit I found both roads a bit narrow for the type of riding I enjoy - eg sweeping corners! I ride Paekakariki hill a lot and enjoy that more.

    Likewise

I enjoy the sweeping corners more as well. The Parapara from Wanganui to Raetihi is a great ride, although there are a lot of roadworks there at the moment. It'll be cool when they finish mucking around up there. Fields track is also a nice rice ride.
