Yeehaa, finally got to ride further than home-work-home!

An angel of mercy (my aunty) came and dropped a rear light bulb off to me at work today, so I decided to follow her to Rongotea. Cool! First decent road ride and it was actually fun

Even in the rain!
Next time I guess I get to try it in my own......

Just a suggestion for KBers in each area. Why don't (some of) the newer/more nervous riders get together on their own organised rides, perhaps assisted by one or two experienced bikers? Seems the one in Orkland recently was very successful. It would be great socially & do wonders for everyone's confidence.

And look well ahead not at the road in front of your wheel but well ahead and we will see you on the road for year. You go Girl. Get up here to the Hawkes Bay were the weather is good and roads are great.

That is a good idea. Why don't you put one on. Call for interested people and see if you can get a group together. I would be keen on such a ride. :spudwave:

Good on ya. It was good that you had someone on hand in case the unthinkable happens - to paraphrase my dad: you might not be intending on having an accident today but you never know what some other bugger's got planned.

Going for long rides out of town is great for getting to know your wheels (even for experienced riders with a new bike), plus increases your experience and builds confidence in both your own abilities and your bike. The risks of injury tend to be higher if you bin at motorway speeds but there are generally less people around and they tend to be more predictable than town traffic (not always, but I've had way more close calls in town than out on the open road) Then again, being walloped by some stupid shit at a roundabout could be more injurous than binning on the open road and going for a slide.

Always look at least 2 cars ahead in traffic - highstop lights are a boon, I find I stop before the car immediately in front of me because I react to the car in front of him before he does. That does not mean "ignore the car immediately in front", it means "be aware of both of the cars". Even if the car in front of the one you're following does not have highstops, you should be able to see if they start to decelerate and you're already prepared for the fact that the car directly in front of you is going to decelerate pretty soon - either willingly or abruptly, depending on how alert they are. If you're already stopping you can avoid close calls.

It all comes with time and practice.

Mencius- Give us a yell if you want to go riding any time. Just PM me for my phone or mobile no. I ride a GN250, so there wont be any 300 km/h wheelie demonstrations type stuff

I'm keen to show others around a few of the roads round these parts

Sweet! That'd be cool some time Storm :-) Got room for my fifteen year old cousin on his GN too?

As for 300km/h wheelies? Well I've spent far too much money getting my license to break the conditions of my learners (much :-) And the SRV couldn't go that fast, ever..........not to mention I'm a big girls blouse :-)
