Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. What was I thinking? I will keep this short.
I have 3 bike Zumos (1 450 and 2 550s) plus a hand-held Montana. Zumos set up for different countries (US/Mexico/Canada and NZ/Australia). Have not updated since 2011 for the New Zealand map. Went online and bought lifetime upgrades, with the device connected, Garmin software recognized the device and offered me the lifetime upgrades. Paid $199.
Unable to download any upgrade. Hmmm. 4 days, 3 support emails, 3 phone calls and about 50 minutes on hold later... Garmin's only response is (and yes I would have known this if I had researched this online before buying) "even though you can buy map upgrades through our software with your old device connected, we don't sell upgrades for your old unit. You must buy a new unit and then you can buy our upgrades (for the new unit)".
Shorter version: Garmin have adopted Obamacare's website design, customer service and lying approach.
In summary, no legacy support, and no damn given about the customer. Disappointed but not surprised... caveat emptor.
As my Garmin devices die I shall replace with something else. This time I will do my research :-)
What the Thumper said. I buy the units, but never the maps.
NZ has the nzopengps.org open source maps, and a damn sight more accurate than Garmin maps. Released weekly usually, as well.
Update the firmware on the Zumo 550 from Garmin, but the maps, open source all the way. Got a 550 lying around somewhere I should probably flick off, as a deal on a 660 was too good to ignore...

Have a mint one here, cheap as chips...were over $1000! Only thing is, they don't have a battery capability. Fix that with hard wiring to battery, so never turns off unless YOU turn it off.
No drain to the battery, minimal.
I have one, RAM mounts can be sourced. Maps can be loaded via CF Card...
They will take NZ maps and are rout-able...
Thinking of using one as a back up....
what handlebar mount do you fellas recommend for the garmin 60cx, i bought a cheaper one but its a bit tinnie for my liking so i dont trust it and aint gonna use it

As long as you have the belt clip knob, this will fit all of the 60 series. You then have to get an arm, and a ball mount. Robust, strong and won't budge.
Over time you will get little rub marks on the unit, no big deal though...
I have three of these at home along with a 60Cx, and two 60CS units....
The units came with mounts so now I got about four...
I still prefer the Montana though....
Any RAM mount.
Just got my first GPS, now signed up for a lot of technology angst
first issue, is it came with a windscreen sucker type holder and a belt clip carribena thingy which both are useless on a bike. Whats the best way to mount it on the bike? Not real fond of having it on the handlebar sticking up like some have.
Its a Garmin 62s
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........
Buy the RAM mount cradle for it and bolt that to whatever you want or buy more RAM parts to set up their full system how ever it may be configured to suit your needs.
If not on the handlebars then where do you have the space to position it clear of everything and viewable.
Try isolate it from Vibration a bit.

Yep, the RAM mounts are falling-off-proof.
