very cheap 2watter at just $85 plus postage, but headsets for $120, dang

could someone with one please explain how PTT works and the connections, wondering if i could make a couple headset setups myself as im strapped for extra cash at mo :P

PTT = Push to talk, generally you have a button mounted somewhere on your handle bars that you push when you want the other person to hear you. Other alternative is VOX (Voice Operated Something, memory blank ) but I think that would be a pain at speeds of 100k+.

Not sure of their setup but generally it is fairly easy to make your own setup from a mic, etc.

My mate and I have thought about doing this with our ham radios 1.5W (smaller than cellphones) but I haven't seen any setups where the earpiece is like an earplug to help cancel out wind noise etc. I think some of the fancier systems may be able to do active noise cancelation but not sure.

If you want to know the electronics of how the PTT system works I'm sure someone can explain this or when I'm more awake I'll have a look in the depths of my noggin.

Depending on the radio you go for, you should be able to wire the PTT into the mic or speaker plug. Normally the use a sterio plug, one ring is common, one is for the mic or speaker and the other ring is for the PTT.

I put together a couple of rigs for the Uniden radios. If anyone is interested I can send them the circuit diagrams. You can put two together with about $50 of bits from Dick smiths and a couple of dirt bike kill switches. Biggest hassle is pluging in/out when you get on/off the bike. Ended up butchering a cheap set of headphones instead of using earplugs. Much more comfortable

The PHS website (the http://www.amalgamate2000.com/ one) has circuit diagrams for their stuff, I believe.
zErax - the whole rider-pillion intercom from Pinfolds is only $117, including two headsets.

2.5mm stereo plug with the sleeve earth, ring speaker, and tip microphone 3.5 mm mono plug is PTT switch (WT-419)

i think this is what i want to make, so should be very easy to make own headset ,perhaps play with resistance to get it sounding good
