Auckland Funeral Ride Wednesday 4 March 2009

To any motorcyclists who knew Gary POPE (who passed away at Auckland Hospital on 26 February) and wish to ride with me and escort him to his funeral at North Shore Memorial Park Schnapper Rock Rd.

I will be coming down to Auckland and will meet up on East Coast Rd by Sartors Ave Browns Bay at 1pm, will pick up family and hearse at that location. Nod

Guys n gals a heads up for you. Gary Pope has been in the bike industry for the last umpteen years.
He bought out Central Motorcycle dismantlers when it was on Great north road or the end of K road depending on how ya look at it. He moved it and renamed it Pope motorcycles
For a number of years he owned Pope Motorcycles in Mt eden just down the raod from where Mt eden Motorcycles used to be.
He was the owner of the first genuine black piper I ever saw.
Actually he'd made it into a wire wheel black piper.
Last time I saw Gary he was working at Henderson Motorcycles as a mechanic.
Scares me cos the guy was/is my age

Gary wasn"t the owner of the Black Piper, I was
I bought it as a smashed up wreck, I bought it as a wreck where apparently the owner did not make it.
People talk of the Katana as a wire wheel black piper but it wasn"t only this gsx1100ex model was, It had the smaller tank 19 litre instead of 21 and stage 2 cams plus better carbs but not smooth bores I think, Fatboy (Gary) did help me rebuild as we were flatmates over at birkenhead. In the garage were quite a few bikes. The smaller tank was because of the carb position the 21 litre tank tap was in the wrong place, I found this out after Fatboy did me a deal on getting the tank painted. Other difference's are of course the black pipes which I think were 4 into 2, most of the time I rode around with the yoshi 4 into 1 pipe without the baffles while I worked at Mike Vincents (bastards made me redundent after my wheelie thorough the next door bottleshop window). Anyway the black piper was a great bike (wheelie bike - onewa road at 190km on back wheel) and Gary mostly rode his gs1000s. When I left NZ I sold the bike to Jim (the Jew) so do not know where it is now. We had a lot of fun riding around with people like the "Jew", Steve (or flipper who you guessed it flipped his bike on the way to pukekohe one day) BVJ and lots more
