Wellington motorists told to look out for motorbike
    New 7:37AM Wednesday Mar 04, 2009

Police are warning Wellington commuters to watch out for a broken-down motorbike.

Sergeant Andy Dow said it appears the motorbike rider has pushed the bike into the centre of the motorway.

He said the bike broke down in the southbound fast lane just before the Aotea Quay off-ramp.

WTF??? Anyone know who this is/was? Love to hear the rest of the story & why the rider felt the middle of the MW was the best spot!

If he broke down in the fast lane, do you think he'd want to push his bike across several lanes to the shoulder?
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Depending on the speed of traffic I guess. I personally wouldn't have an issue with slowing/stopping cars to get the hell out of dodge in those circumstances.

Quite. Though we are assuming it was a male, I mean a chick would never do such a thing!

Central median strip? Makes sense to me if that's the case.

Reminds me of the time my friend broke down on the southern motorway, she's stuck on the central median strip. Hubby comes along to rescue her: Right, I'll push it across the motorway to the shoulder and we'll go from there. Waits for break in traffic....ready, go! Trouble was, the steering lock had been left on so he's pushing it around in a bloody great circle on the motorway, with traffic bearing down on him at warp speed!

Well that sounds like about as much fun as a fart in a space suit

Nah, it's cos it's illegal for women to ride.

I've had sudden engine failure in the fast lane. Cars don't like you changing lane while slowing so I parked up next to the armco in the middle. Safe for me while I thought about the issue.

Well if the bird trying to park in our carpark yesterday is anything to go buy then yes, my God it was one of the worst displays ive ever seen, an extremely basic parking maneuver turned into a laughing fit for 3 others including myself

She was from Israel so the laughing stopped pretty quick when she got out of the car

Saw a classic example of that a few weeks ago.
Saw this brilliant T-bucket with a blower, straight pipes, etc, and wanted to get a better look at it, so pulled over and let him past, so I could have an ogle. A couple of minutes later, it suddenly makes this loud noise (I think the engine expired), and he abruptly pulled left (across 2 lanes of traffic) and onto the shoulder. He was lucky he wasn't hit by the other traffic, but I guess he didn't want to be stuck in the right-hand lane (there was no median) and made the most of what momentum he still had.

It must have been not unexpected, as he had his woman following him in the Falcadore, and she pulled up behind him.

Off topic but what the hell.
True story - names withheld for obvious reasons.
A hot rod enthusiast is building up a new T bucket and doing a bloody good job of it what's more. This man does it right.
He has got the new motor located (moderately worked 347 IIRC) although there are some tasks remaining, like a retaining bracket to anchor the throttle return springs. However, he can't resist it, he is dying to know if this thing will start and to hear what it sounds like. So he jury rigs a supply to the ignition circuit, firmly grasps the throttle butterfly shaft, reaches over and presses the starter solenoid. The engine cranks over a few times and catches. He's rapt. It idles nicely and sounds sweet. He revs it a couple of times but nothing too vigorous, it's still brand new and there is still stuff needs doing.
About now, back in the cockpit, the gear lever works a bit loose and drops back into the DRIVE position, just as he gives it one final blip.
It launches from under his hand - straight through the end wall of the garage and out into the back yard.
Remember what I said about no throttle return springs.
Something it hit on the way out turns the steering so it's now doing full noise circuits and going up through the gears since the transmission works too.
Wifes brand new pergola goes west and the back yard is reduced to ruins before the Bucket finds the swimming pool and silence descends again.
    Hubby is not popular!

This was well over a decade ago and I don't think that he as managed to live it down yet.
I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.

    Seriously: "fast lane"?!

I always thought we didn't have that here.

I don't mean in a "ha ha no one goes that fast" way but in the no-legal-defintion-of way.
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
