    What do they do......

    in a defensive driving course...

I am starting one on 7th March at AA to reduce my time for restricted from 18 to 12 months... so i wanna be prepared.

anyone know what exactly they do in theses courses?
Do i have to learn anything (any class notes) or just go there with my protective gear and my bike and all we will do is ride around .... meaning learning to be more aware??

any help will really be appreciated.

a DD course is theory only, a skills course has a practical component. i guess you could go to the dd course in your gear, but that would be a personal choice

Hazard perception - how to become paranoid that everything that can go wrong will, and every other road user is out to kill you.

Running commentary - talk to yourself as you ride along, "that bus could pull out, that kid on the bike may swerve suddenly" etc.

Road positioning - know and plan your escape routes. Can that lorry/cage driver see my in their mirror etc ?

Well, that's what my defensive driver course mostly consisted off. My course was mostly practical, with the occasional sit down session with diagrams. Only mental notes were taken. But I did mine in the UK so yours may be soooooo different.

Hope you don't get a tutor who has english as his second,or third or fourth language like my daughter did...she spent the whole course trying to figure out what he was saying...she passed though eh,and got her full licence quicker.

yeah i just did one of these so i could finally become legal, consisted of sitting on ass for 4 nights, watching poxy videos of people driving cages, and go karts, there were some complete forest gumps in the group, the kind of cage drivers you dread coming across, but everyone passed, i'm pretty sure the only way you can fail is if you dont turn up. you get a neat little booklet to write in and keep, full of crap homework like surveying people to find out why they speed, and draw a diagram of a local intersection and list the habits of drivers you saw in a 15 minute period while you sat there and watched them like a complete dork. by the third night i was begining to wonder if it was worth the $110 bucks it cost, but there were some lusty little blondes on the course, so i guess it was!
