Insuring a vehicle you don't own

Arrgh. Borrowing mateys camper van for a long weekend. He doesn't have it insured. Rung up State to stick it on my business insurance for the weekend. "Sorry, you can't insure a vehicle that doesn't belong to you" sez the droid. But I only want third party, I'm not insuring the vehicle, only myself against other vehicles I may hit. No bloody joy.

So...is this a legal thing in NZ or just State behing awkward?

If you have 3rd party insurance on another of your vehicles it may well be covered.

ASB cover a vehicle you are driving but does not belong to you under their 3rd party insurance as it is owned by a 3rd party.

AMI won't cover the camper (even though it IS owned by a 3rd party), but would cover you for damage you may do to any other vehicle/s should an accident in the camper be your fault.

In each case though it requires that you have 3rd party on another vehicle that you own.

It should not really go on your Business Insurance because that is for Business assets. May have "Driving Other Cars" extension on your own Private Car Policy.

Yes you can insure a vehicle if you have an insurable interest. You have an interest to insure in case you cause damage to a TP...State are generally awkward.

Suggest you transfer your business to a Broker at renewal. Cheap is not always cheaper in the long run.

Private Car Policy? Nah...too expensive. I just throw all the vehicles on the business insurance to get 3rd party cover.

I have car cover with NZI (Lantern) and when I was driving someone elses car and had a minor prang (my fault) they paid out to the other party under my "Liability cover".

Only way to get around that is to say you're buying it in a couple of weeks, and need to insure before taking possession.

Just have your mate agree that you're buying it... then oh dear, deal falls through. For bikes at least, you get a temporary 14 day cover...

My broker insures me under my business policy. I'm insured for any car I'm driving, including rentals and borrowed vehicles.
The greatest pleasure of my recent life has been speed on the road. . . . I lose detail at even moderate speed but gain comprehension. . . . I could write for hours on the lustfulness of moving swiftly.
